Front-Line Supervisor

  • After two years of periodically acting as Supervisor and climbing the crew hierarchy ladder, I was successful in achieving the position of Frontline Supervisor
  • As one of the four Frontline Supervisors I lead a team in the achievement of the shifts daily tasks as well as through a variety of challenges, and stressful situations of our high-impact work environment
  • Frontline Supervisors are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Ottawa Mission’s Frontline services
  • Frontline Supervisors represent the concerns and safety of every client while acting as a liaison between clients, Frontline, and all other departments
  • As Supervisor I ensure I am approachable and welcoming in order to maintain an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality
  • As the first point of contact for my crew members I ensure I am always available in answering questions, providing support to the team and providing training as needed
  • As Supervisor I am frequently temporarily filling in for management in the handling of operational issues or problems that arise within the department and liaising with different departments within the Ottawa Mission
  • As Supervisor I solve problems according to changing priorities by considering many different procedures and/or standards while considering Mission procedures

  • As a member of the Joint Health and Safety committee I take part in organizational meetings with members of different departments to discuss health and safety related matters in regards to the Ottawa Mission, its staff, its departments and clients
  • I also take part in occasional health and safety inspections for our on site shelter as well as our off-site buildings
  • I am a liaison between my coworkers and the committee; being available to discuss health and safety concerns that my fellow peers may have and bring them forward to the committee to find safe solutions

  • As an Acting Supervisor on various shifts, I promote a strong team approach while ensuring all duties are performed per policy and procedure

  • Assigned to Lake Ontario Park I was tasked with ensuring the park was clean and safe for the community to use through litter removal, landscaping efforts, and trail upkeep.
  • Cleaning washrooms, collecting waste and recyclables, and ensuring those using the park were doing so as per the by-laws
  • Meeting diverse groups added new learning opportunities and experiences
  • Dealing with small and large numbers reinforced the need for clear, friendly communication
  • Assisted with the coordination of seasonal staff, ensuring smooth operations during peak periods.
  • Some interactions required instruction, direction, leadership and flexibility to resolve
  • Park maintenance included using gas-powered tools and equipment as well as tree mulching
