Sharad Jaiswal

Mountain View

Summary

My background/strengths are in analyzing bottlenecks and inefficiency up and down the stack, and principled, data driven engineering to improve the underlying systems. In the recent past, I have worked on:

1. Improving video streaming on Meta's apps

2. Accelerating web applications and Ad stacks, at scale
3. Large scale, low-cost video delivery on wireless data networks
4. Inferring performance bottlenecks in Tier-1 IP and 4G data networks.

I also have considerable experience in processing large amounts of data through its life-cycle - from ingestion/storage at fiber-link speeds, building aggregation/ETL pipelines and developing inference/analysis techniques.

Work History

Optimization Engineer

Meta Platforms Inc.
11.2019 - Current

1. Improve video streaming performance on Meta's Family of Applications

2. Optimize Meta's Edge Network Deployments for Application performance.

Senior Staff Engineer

Instart Inc
11.2013 - Current
  • Technical lead for flagship features on accelerating dynamic web content (HTML Streaming). Deployed in several hundred customer domains with 100+m page views every day.
  • Initiated and key contributor to the real user monitoring (RUM) and A/B testing platform, with industry novel analytics to identify and visualize web-page and Ads stack bottlenecks, and correlate Ad creatives with poor page performance.
  • Key contributor to "new initiatives" projects, specifically around Ad stack and header bid acceleration, through a combination of predictive resource prefetching, resource scheduling and service workers as a web-proxy in the browser.
  • Miscellaneous engineering projects around scaling the HTML content transformation pipeline, 3rd party cookie virtualization and cookie syncing and customer log delivery.
  • Filed and granted several patents, contributed to technical blogs, and mentored employees and interns.

Researcher & Group Lead

Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies (later Alcatel-Lucent)
01.2005 - 01.2013

Researcher in a Large scale, low cost content delivery networking group. Projects include:

  • Design of high throughput point-point 802.11b/g WiFi networks for low-cost rural connectivity (project VillageNet)
  • Data offloading over Wifi/Bluetooth hot-spots (project mango)
  • Audio content generation/dissemination via community radio networks (project CommunityWeb)
  • Several papers in Top-tier conferences (Full list: http://bit.ly/SJPubsList) and patent filings

Co-Founder And Founding Engineer

Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Smartloading venture
04.2010 - 07.2011
  • Part of founding team, contributed to product strategy and direction.
  • Devised novel caching/pre-fetching algorithms for low-cost, high-quality video delivery.
  • Led an engineering team that build the Beta version of product used in Tier-1 service provider trials and demoed in high-profile industry conferences (e.g. Mobile World Congress)

Member Of Technical Staff

Alactel-Lucent Wireless Network Guardian Product
01.2008 - 01.2009
  • Engineer in an IP/4G cross-layer network insights product
  • Responsible for key UMTS and Network performance analysis modules.

Research Intern

Sprint Advanced Technology Labs
01.2003 - 08.2003

Detecting TCP/IP anomalies at line-speed in the Sprint Tier-1 network backbone.

Research Intern

Hewlett-Packard Laboratories
01.2000 - 08.2000

Realistic work-load generation for web-server load tests
