In the specialized field of Occupational Health and Safety, the officer is responsible to:
Provide information, guidance and advice to employers, contractors, employees, unions, equipment suppliers and professionals with respect to their duties and responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Youth Employment Act and the Smoke Free Places Act.
Aid and support labour management to work cooperatively to affect the highest possible standard of health & safety in the workplace.
Conduct workplace inspections, issue orders (including immediate stop work orders), investigate injuries and fatal accidents, and investigate allegations of violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Youth Employment Act and the Smoke Free Places Act.
Initiate prosecution action and conduct the required investigation, document the evidence, prepare the appropriate file and work with the crown prosecutor to prepare the case. This may involve identifying potential witnesses (including expert witnesses) and providing technical support
As an Occupational Health and Safety Officer:

Enter any workplace at any time without warrant or notice; take up or use any device, article,
thing, material or biological chemical or physical agent; require the production of any drawings,
specifications, licence, document, record or report and inspect, examine or copy same.

The Occupational Health & Safety Officer reviews assigned divisional reports and WCB
Accident/claim information of employers within the district to target inspection activity.
•
The Occupational Health & Safety Officer conducts unannounced workplace inspections
to determine if appropriate health & safety requirements are in place and working effectively.
Conducts physical inspections to determine that compliance with the Occupational Health
and Safety Act and Regulations are met.
•
The Occupational Health & Safety Officer makes a decision in the field on corrective action
Required, including immediate compliance orders, and stop work orders where the imminent
risk to worker health and safety is present.
Occupational Health & Safety Officers must conduct preliminary workplace industrial hygiene
assessments to ensure compliance with the Occupation Health & safety Act and Regulations.

Occupational Health & Safety Officers are required to be competent with the use of a number
of industrial hygiene instruments (i.e. gas detection noise meters, etc).

Occupational Health & Safety Officers must have extensive knowledge of industrial standards
and ability to interpret detailed assessments reports
The Occupational Health & Safety Officer while working within established divisional policy,
initiates prosecution actions and develops the evidence file for such action.

of court procedures.

The Occupational Health & Safety Officer will be required to work with the Crown Prosecutor
and Provincial Coroner to initiate court proceedings based on investigation findings.

for court officials.

The Occupational Health & Safety Officer will be required to identify potential witnesses
and provide technical support to the crown.
Occupational Health & Safety Officer receives accident reports and investigates same to
determine cause, preventative measures, compliance with the Act(s), Regulations, Codes
of Practice, and establishes standards, issuing orders/commencing prosecution.

Occupational Health & Safety Officer assists other officers with particularly demanding
investigations such as fatal accident investigations or where an Officer may have specific
expertise or training in a particular industry which will be of value to the lead investigator.

Occupational Health & Safety Officer determines that other provincial/federal legislation does
not take precedence of the accident scene.

Occupational Health & Safety Officer must ensure accident scene is secured and identify
potential witnesses.

divisional policy & procedures utilizing extensive knowledge of accident investigation techniques.

Occupational Health and Safety Officer ensures the employee’s right to participate is realized
by requiring the establishment and functioning of joint occupational health and safety committees or the selection of employee health and safety representatives as appropriate to the workplace and the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

thorough understanding of the rights and responsibilities of workers and employees as defined in the Occupational Health and Safety, the Youth Employment Act and the Smoke Free Places Act.

professional engineers, or industrial hygienists to support investigations and inspections as appropriate.
