I started at Riverside City College in February of 2020. I was approached by the department chair of the Early Childhood Education program, Debbie Cazares. Mrs. Cazares wanted to bring a required education course from UCR to RCC. RCC students would be able to transfer the course after completion. Mrs. Cazares gave me the syllabus from UCR and from there I created ED 10: Introduction to Education Studies. I selected the primary textbook and use articles to extend the content from the textbook. My primary challenge when putting this course together is that UCR is a quarter system school and RCC is on a semester system. I am a public school teacher, so I supplement the class with the realities of being a public school teacher and all that it entails.
In January of 2021, I was given the opportunity to teach an online course, EAR 26: Childhood Health, Safety and Nutrition. Initially I used a textbook for this course. I then began to use the Online Educational Resource (OER) for this course. It was very similar to the textbook. I chose to use the OER because it is free for students and all students have access to the OER. All of the student learning objectives are met with the OER.
I started my career as a teacher in 1994, for San Bernardino City Unified School District. I taught a third grade bilingual class.
In 1997, I started working for Riverside Unified School District as a reading teacher. I was trained to be a Reading Recovery teacher. Reading Recovery is one to one reading program for students who are struggling readers. I was later trained in the Spanish version, Descrubiendo La Lectura. I have taught kindergarten and first grade. Currently, I am a first grade teacher in the Dual Language Immersion program. I primarily work with English Language Learners. I am very familiar with different instructional strategies to meet the needs second language learners. I also differentiate instruction for my students who are either new to the country or did not attend kindergarten.
Up until last year, I was the grade level team leader. My role as team leader was to attend monthly leadership meetings with other grade levels and the principal. My responsibility was to then meet with the other grade level teachers and share the information from the Leadership meetings.
In 2004 I earned the National Board Certified Teacher certificate. This required the completion of four portfolios and an online exam testing my knowledge on grade level standards.
In 2016, I earned my Doctor of Philosophy in education. My dissertation's topic is Effective Writing Strategies for Second Language Learners in Structured English Immersion Classrooms. It is a mixed methods dissertation. For the quantitative section, I compared trimester one and trimester two writing samples from four different kindergarten classrooms. I had each teacher record a whole group writing lesson and a small group writing lesson. I analyzed the recordings to determine which type of feedback (if any) was given. I then determined which type of feedback produced the most improvement between trimester one and trimester two writing samples. For the qualitative section, I read numerous articles on effective writing strategies. I learned that most research on writing was primarily conducted with middle-school aged students and older. That in itself, was a challenge. I also learned, according to the research, that a majority of teachers found that teaching students how to write is very difficult and that they felt that their teacher training programs did not prepare them to teach writing (this was across all grade levels).
