Ensure and help Indigenous people involved in the criminal justice system to obtain fair, just, equitable, and culturally relevant treatment. Duties include but not limited to:

  • To explain to Indigenous accused their rights and responsibilities.
  • Explain to accused their charge in plain language.
  • Explain to accused how to navigate their way through the court/justice system.
  • Act as a liaison between the accused and the courts (judges, crowns, victims, etc.)
  • Speak on Clients behalf including pleas, plea bargaining, speak to bail, adjournments, sentencing, assist with trial matters etc. and to speak to Gladue and any other relevant information that will best assist client and the courts for the best suitable culturally relevant outcome.
  • Refer Accused to legal aid and any other available services (treatment, detox, Kainai Peace Making Program, job ready)
  • follow up with clients. ie. explain what they need to do to pay fines or where to report for probation.
  • Speak to and assist victims and family members of accused.
  • Assist clients or make the proper referrals for Family court matters.
  • worked with elders (elders program previously).
  • Community networking and presentations.
  • Maintain Statistics on clients with and without a charge.
