Highly motivated upcoming optometry school grad looking for a job opportunity that will allow me to practice to the full scope of our profession whilst also providing plenty of opportunities for growth and the addition of valuable skills to aid with my overall goal of being a well-rounded Doctor who delivers excellent patient care.
At this rotation I gained valuable experience working in a fast paced private practice setting. I worked as part of a team which included an optometric tech who was responsible for the full patient workup and special testing, a front desk receptionist, an optician and an office manager. I learned to be very comfortable listening to the patient's complaints and pre-testing results from the tech, performing a comprehensive exam in ~ 20 minutes and handing the patient over to our optical team to assist them with their glasses selection. I saw a wide variety of patients aged 3 and up and became very comfortable with fitting soft contact lenses, myopia control with Misight contact lenses, managing amblyopic risk factors as well as diagnosing and treating a wide assortment of ocular diseases. I examined a total of 812 patients at this site averaging 12-15 pts per day and gained experience with the Optos fundus camera, Optos OCT & Octopus Visual Field.
During this rotation I worked primarily with a geriatric population base and gained extensive experience in the treatment and management of ocular diseases such as Glaucoma, AMD, Dry eye & Uveitis. I was also responsible for doing the full work-up and special testing for my patients using instruments such as Humphrey Visual Field, Zeiss Cirrus OCT, Zeiss Clarus fundus imaging & autorefractor. I examined a total of 389 patients at this rotation with an average of 8 patients per day.
This was a volunteer mission trip working with Remote Access Medicine to deliver optometric care to under served populations in rural areas. During this mission trip patients were refracted and had their ocular health examined, most of whom for the first time. My efficiency and undilated fundus exam skills were greatly refined during this trip. In total, our team of 6 students and 2 doctors examined ~ 1000 patients over a 3 day trip.
