I volunteered for approx 8 years at the Timiskaming Child and Family Services in Kirkland Lake. I developed a religious study program at the Maximum Security Pineger Young Offenders facility. The program included the study of world religions, Bible study, movie nights with showings of family rated movies. We also had Karaoke nights and even brought in a local band which gave the kids a concert. I also had volunteers knit mitts and hats for the offenders when winter came I even introduced story time evenings, this was essentially a quiet time for the youth. I read to the kids uplifting encouraging stories. None of the programs were mandatory for the inmates but the sessions were between well attended and full. Before implementing programs I would discuss them with the Pineger management . I was in the role of mentor to many of them. I also put myself on 24 call if one of the youth was in need of counseling. At times some of the youth would basically have a bad day either with other inmates or staff. Sometimes the inmate would be violent and the O.P.P. would be called in to restrain the inmate. At these difficult times either the centre or the inmate would ask me to come in and sit with the young offender. It was challenging work. I received several certificates for my volunteer service while at Pineger and Timiskaming Child Family Services between 2000 /2009 as well as awards. I received in 2008 the Ontario Volunteer Service award from David Ramsey MPP Timiskaming- Cochrane and received after my first 5 years of service the Volunteer service award from The Honourable Michael Chan Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and from The Honorable Dalton McGunity Premier of Ontario
