Dear Dr. Miller
I am writing today to request to affiliate with the Department of Communication Studies as an adjunct or affiliated professor.[TG1] My current role as the Knowledge Mobilization Advisor at Concordia Applied AI Institute affords me opportunities to conduct interdisciplinary research and design interactive knowledge translation activities that align well with the goals of the Simone de Beauvoir Institute.
This research builds on my doctoral dissertation in the Cultural Studies program Not a Joke: Women’s work and feminist laughter in stand-up comedy where I conducted an interdisciplinary analysis of the discursive structures and affective politics of feminist stand-up comedy. I continue to work as a feminist comedy producer through the Hysterics Collective. Here is our most recent output, featuring comic Courtney Gilmour, resulting from a collaboration with the Agnes Etherington Arts Centre called Agnes Gets Hysterical. Stay tuned for the next one featuring local Montreal comic Tranna Wintour!
Over the summer I conceptualized and was awarded a 200k grant where I lead a team of ten research assistants and community partners (including Women on Web, Women in AI, Queer Tech, and Digital Moment) in designing and developing practical tools and resources that Artificial Intelligence researchers, educators, employers, and practitioners could use to improve gender equity within STEM fields broadly and in AI sectors more specifically. To this end, we created a set of trading cards that depict women and gender non-conforming folks who have made contributions to the fields of computing and AI and situated them on a timeline. We developed a set of normative principles that address gender inequity in AI in two central ways: First, these principles call for fostering a welcoming and inclusive AI work environment that adheres to the values of equality, respect, reflexivity, and accountability. Second, the principles highlight the need to critically re-evaluate ML/AI research practices and their social impacts to ensure more inclusive and socially responsible AI systems.
We are currently building on this project in the form of a NFRF-T application. I am playing a central role in this application, working closely with Dr. Tanja Tajmel, the Nominated Primary Investigator, and will supervise graduate students in the realization of the application and (hopefully!) awarded project. I’d love to work more closely with students from the Simone de Beauvoir Institute on this.
Interdisciplinarity is a central guiding principle of the Applied AI Institute, and I think my research would be enriched through an affiliation with Department of Communication Studies. Please let me know if you are open to this possibility and what the process for making a formal request is. I have attached my C.V for your review.
Warmly,
Lindsay.
