Class development and session planning
As a program assistant (Placement Student), I worked closely with the life care coordinator/supervisor with all resident programs who have entered the full-time rehabilitation center. I helped oversee all resident treatment plans and was responsible for co-facilitate classes like boundaries, conflict resolution, emotional sobriety, and mindfulness.
I would join resident care meetings to discuss the books, and workbooks the residents were receiving, and go over intake assessments to prepare for new resident intakes. After some time, I would assign the workbooks, handouts, and materials necessary for the resident’s individual program.
As a placement student I was involved in the one-on-one mentorship program, where I mentored and was a big sister role for a young individual. We would meet virtually and play games, do learning activities, encourage they’re growth, and overall be someone they could talk to.
Simultaneously, I also was paired with another placement student to create and run a Go Girls program for two different age groups. We created session plans, activities, worksheets, and facilitated discussions with the students.
With both sets of responsibilities, we developed more initiative skills and the ability to grow in time management. I was able to apply lecture techniques like rapport building, IEP development, and facilitation skills.
As a children’s church volunteer, I helped facilitate classes and activities for the youth, ages 6-8 on Sundays. Skills I acquired during my time volunteering included:
- Facilitation skills/leadership
- Organization skills
- Team building
- Communication
