Since I came to Canada, I have been actively involved in school and extracurricular activities to benefit my community. Academically, I actively participated in academic competitions, ranking in the top 25% of the world in the Canadian Senior Math Competition (2021), the Waterloo Euclid Math Competition (2022), and the Waterloo Avogadro Chemistry Competition (2022). Outside of school, my colleague and I co-manage a non-for-profit organization, from December 2021-2023.
Beside, I was involved in setting up and managing a math club to provide a platform for members to interact and prepare for math fairs and competitions. I was also in charge of the long lasting Pu'er Aid Education program which assisted more than 50 students in underdeveloped areas and is still running today. During the pandemic, I organized members of our non-for-profit orgnization to raise donation for Mississauga Food Bank, and we sorted 2,383 pounds of food.
Throughout my career as a student, I have met many teachers who inspired me in different stages of my interest in exploring the world and fostered habits not only in academics but also in life. As a result of this I want to assist as many people as I can with my strengths, which serves as the initial reason for my desire to become a teaching assistant.
During my high school years, I was involved in managing a non-profit organization as a co-director with two colleagues on my spare time, and we organized and participated in various activities to benefit our community.
For instance, we operated the Pu’er Aid Education program (2021-2023) together with a charity volunteer organization in Pu'er City of Yunnan Province of China. The aim of the program is to provide English language courses for students from underdeveloped areas to offer the possibility of developing an international vision and to promote intercultural exchange.
As the organizer of this project, I was primarily responsible for the training of volunteers as well as teaching as part of the program for a year. In order to customize our syllabus to the students' level of English, I have divided the students into three levels based on their speaking ability and vocabulary base, and differentiated the textbooks for the various stages of the program. Being a volunteer, I teach the lessons with inspiring students' interest in learning English as primary goal. For instance, I began each day's lesson by explaining an interesting fact about an English-speaking country or a story about the composition of words. After a year, the student voluntarily signed up to participate in the school's speech contest.
With all these events, I have gained some experience in arranging the teaching content, managing the class and solving any emergencies that may arise.
