The Golden State Seal Merit Diploma (GSSMD) is a recognition given by the California State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to students who demonstrate mastery in at least six subject areas. To be eligible, a student must be qualified to receive a high school diploma and show mastery in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and U.S. history, plus two additional subjects of their choice. Local school districts affix the GSSMD insignia to qualifying graduates' diplomas.
