Research Experience

Dr. Ryan Mailloux, School of Human Nutrition (SHN): May 2023- April 2024 -Macdonald Campus, McGill University (Sainte Anne De Bellevue, QC)

  • Established sexual dimorphisms in the production of mtH2O2 by the Krebs Cycle through the Amplex Ultra Red (AUR) assay
  • Ran immunoblots to correlate mtH2O2 production with levels of protein expression (SOD1 and NDUFS1)
  • Identified alpha ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (KGDH) as one of the main sources of mtH2O2 production in isolated liver mitochondria
  • Investigated the difference in chain length of fatty acid metabolites such as palmitoyl carnitine on levels of mtH2O2 production ex vivo
  • Determined the target of titration inhibitor KMV (3-methyl-2-oxovaleric acid), and the role of S1QEL and S3QEL inhibitors in curtailing mtH2O2 production ex vivo
  • Continued in the fall and winter semesters as an Honors Concurrent student, investigating the role of a novel compound on interference with antioxidant enzymes

Dr. Saji George, Department of Food Science: May 2022- September 2022

  • Constructed a novel cell bioink and3d hydrogel-based scaffolding, investigating the use of protamine sulfate as a coagulant
  • Cultured and maintained CaCO2 human epithelial cell line for their inclusion in chitosan-based bioink
  • Optimized the rheology of hydrogel for future in vitro3D printing trials via crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) inclusions
  • Monitored the cell viability and proliferation of cells in vitro via resazurin staining and confocal imaging
