Summary

  • I worked as a Charge Nurse on a palliative care unit for 13 years. This rewarding role gave me the opportunity to connect very closely with patients and families. Working primarily evening shifts, managerial support and resources were minimal. I was often required to make decisions autonomously while providing guidance to physicians, nursing staff, patients and their families. During my time on palliative care, I became a strong leader and was able to manage multiple demands while maintaining a commitment to quality service. I have recently decided to step away from nursing and transitioned to a Rural Staffing Clerk position at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose. The office is responsible for staffing 11 different hospitals within Alberta. Some of the responsibilities in this role include; managing staffing shortages on multiple hospital units, ensuring employee shifts and leaves are coded appropriately for benefit and payroll purposes, following up with managers and employees when issues arise. I have found this role rewarding as it has tapped into and challenged the critical thinking skills I developed through my nursing career while honing my administrative skills. As dynamic as this role is, I do miss the human interaction I found so rewarding as a nurse and volunteer. I am excited for the opportunity to work as a Medical Receptionist as I believe this a great balance of my experience and skills.
