Research

  • NRC Shellfish Project, 08/2022, Present, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Victoria, I designed the Ocean Pollution Monitoring System (OPMS), an R Shiny-based web application that visualizes marine pollutants data. OPMS leverages extensive datasets to offer a comprehensive, accessible, and user-friendly platform for monitoring and managing contaminants like fecal coliforms and biotoxins. Using data from the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP) from nearly 15,000 sites in six Canadian coastal provinces, covering almost 40 years, we combined environmental factors such as precipitation, climate, geography, temperature, and human activities to analyze contamination levels. The system allows users to view pollutant levels and trends in over 10,000 areas along the Canadian coast, helping identify high-contamination regions and correlations with environmental factors. The tool aids environmental managers and policymakers in making informed decisions regarding shellfish harvesting plans and coastal zone management, significantly contributing to marine research and the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Sablefish Genomics Project, 08/2021, Present, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Victoria, In collaboration with Golden Eagle Sablefish, I focused on genomic selection for desirable traits in sablefish, specifically targeting fish size through GWAS and machine learning model development. By analyzing genomic data, we investigated the effects of different SNP genotypes on fish weight variation. We developed a 300-SNP PCR panel to genotype 448 individuals, identifying 8 SNPs associated with sex determination and over 100 SNPs related to body weight. Our statistical analysis revealed that adult female sablefish weigh about 1kg (40%) more than males. Additionally, we established a machine learning model to predict body weight based on genotype, which can help aquaculture companies produce heavier sablefish, significantly increasing economic benefits. Currently, we are analyzing nearly 6 million SNPs through Linkage Disequilibrium (LD) and imputation to find more loci related to sablefish body weight, aiming to further enhance breeding programs.
  • Markovian Strategies for Differential Games, 05/2019, 07/2020, MATH department at Purdue University Northwest, Developed optimization strategies and algorithms for differential games.
  • Interactive Graphic Application for Cyber Security, 05/2018, 07/2019, ECE department at Purdue University Northwest, Designed a Unity3D application to teach cyber security concepts using C and JavaScript.
