Passionate teacher with a philosophy revolving around key values of collaboration, reciprocity, knowledge-seeking, student agency, improvisation and social justice. Firm believer that a teacher’s learning progression is never finished, and therefore resolved to continuously resist complacency in praxis. Strong proponent of pedagogical humility, acknowledging that education is not a unidirectional endeavor and that celebrating every type of learner is crucial to creating an inclusive environment.
- During first practicum at Danforth Collegiate, worked collaboratively to design and deliver numerous assessments in both music and history classes. These deliverables were atypical in that they featured aspects of culturally responsive pedagogy and enabled students to source their own methodologies for their compositions. In particular, a movie trailer scoring assignment enabled students to choose the material they were responding to, and design their own recording schedules.
- Demonstrated adaptability and pedagogical flexibility in teaching history at Danforth, as that is not a teachable or specialty. Learned course material well ahead of time and delivered it in an efficient, timely manner while facilitating engaging classroom discussion every lesson.
- At East York Collegiate, wrote lesson plans every day starting in the second week of practicum, and delivered them successfully, showing profound time management skills.
- Managed to incorporate improvised music forms (i.e. John Zorn's game-pieces, an interactive improvised film scoring exercise) into repertoire-oriented classroom environments. This is in-line with the active decolonization of the contemporary music room.
- As ensemble leader in funk, jazz and rock contexts, facilitated a play-based learning model in which the importance of listening and building on others’ ideas were emphasized as key aspects of musicianship, while repertoire was sourced from the students themselves.
- As private piano instructor, worked with multiple students from ages 6-45 and allowed for each lesson to revolve around a central philosophy of student agency and self-accountable learning.
- Prepared a handful of students in particular for RCM exams, but also worked on production software with another, enabling them to further pursue their own independent music-making aspirations.
