Facilitates the interaction of the person who is deafblind with other people and the environment. The Intervenor provides information about the environment and what is happening, assists the individual who is deafblind to communicate, provides or develops concepts where necessary, confirms actions, assists with life skills and most importantly, assists the individual to achieve as much independence as possible within their situation.
Demonstrate and understanding of the complexity of combined hearing and vision loss, and the integration of the sensory systems in relation to an individual who is deafblind.
·Support an individuals use of orientation and mobility strategies and aids.
Working knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) or Signed Exact English (SEE) / various communication methods are definite assets.
Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of theories and practices related to deafblindness and implements the appropriate practices
• Ensures punctuality and adequately prepares for all responsibilities. Annually, holds a portfolio (limited to the CSP position) of responsibilities and takes accountability and leadership for the location/region (e.g. EARS, JHSC, Snoezlen Room, Lift Trainer, updating Medical Emergency Resource binder, health & safety, compliance)
• Engages in ongoing professional development to enhance current theory and practice. Builds skill and knowledge in the person’s preferred mode of language/communication
i.e. ASL, SEE, LSQ
• Recognizes and supports the development of communication and initiates additional training with respect to various communication methods
• Designs and implements personal plans based on a person-centered approach when providing supports and services and promotes informed choices. Assists people supported with identifying and obtaining personal goals.
• Understands how and when to use and access the services of an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter and a Deaf Interpreter (DI).
