Legal Office Support Assistant II

Los Angeles County Public Defenders Office
05.2012 - 04.2017
  • Mental Health Unit: In 2012 I was assigned to the Public Defenders Office Mental Health Unit, this office only handles the following type of cases: conservatorships (non-probate), mental competency and 72-hour hospital holds and/or involuntary medical holds. As support staff, we had to handle extremely heavy telephone lines from clients in hospitals, conservatees (clients), family members and attorneys in criminal proceedings. All calls are time-sensitive, especially the 72 hour holds either to file or to cancel the proceedings. These require immediate assistance since support staff at the Public Defenders Office are filing on the client’s behalf. This unit is a very heavy, fast-paced environment due to the type of cases it handles as well as the clients that staff works with. Files and calendars must be prepared in advance but may only be done the day before since that is when the court informs the office of the appearance. This unit teaches you to work under very high demand, stressful situations, and very short deadlines.
  • As a support secretary for the unit from 2012-2017, when I was promoted to supervisor, I was assigned to remain in this unit as a supervisor. I continued to carry the line of work I had prior to becoming a supervisor along with taking all the new tasks that came with the supervisorial assignment; the office continued to be short staff and only had a total of three support staff including a supervisor. Conservatorships were filed daily, and work requests had to be produced for field paralegals to interview the clients; sometimes only giving us a week advance notice.
  • From 2018 to the end of 2019, I was invited to be a part of a team that will assist a vendor create the area of Mental Health for CCMS. This is the new paperless filing system for the department that was implemented from scratch in October 2020. The invitation required long hours of exchanging information with the vendor on the type of resources and information that compose a file in Mental Health. Every detail had to be provided to the vendor from where the information was obtained to how we gathered paperwork, to how we completed a file. Details on how notes were included, how annual conservatorships were tracked and how files were closed were required as well.
