Work History

Human Resources Officer

Sumas First Nation
01.2021 - Current

In this role I am responsible for every aspect of Human Resource management for the Nation as well as its subsidiaries and related entities. My responsibilities include:

  • Managing all aspects of employee recruitment, selection and onboarding while maintaining a culturally appropriate approach;
  • Successfully grew the organization from 49 staff to 70 staff throughout 8 different departments;
  • Managing the development of employee contracts and keeping up to date with changes within the Canada Labour Code;
  • Working directly with nation members for employment related matters;
  • Working directly with Nation management and Chief and Council on employee related matters;
  • Managing and administering employee performance reviews, disciplinary action, terminations, resignations and exit interviews when required;
  • Maintaining personnel files both electronically and physically;
  • Managing employee benefits and RPP; Reviewing and developing organization policies and procedures as well as job description documentation;
  • Resolution of workplace conflicts including mediation and incident investigations.

In this role I was responsible for managing the Human Resource department. As I was the first person to enter this new role for the organization, I was given the opportunity to develop my own methods and processes while working in a fast paced and widely varied sector.
