  • Patients range from having conditions such as severe sepsis, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal complications, and illnesses needing drains and chest tubes, cardiac arrhythmias needing drips, MVA patients, GSW, stabbings, and electrolyte imbalances. All are on telemetry monitors.
  • Duties: Assessment and interventions is an important part of our job. Duties include care of up to 3 patients, with or without a CNA. This includes but is not limited to managing drips such as heparin, dobutamine, nitroglycerin, nicardipine, insulin, 3% NS, dopamine, bumex, precedex and more. We are expected to monitor lab values, including H/H and electrolytes, replacing them when needed, and notifying providers when results are critical. Patients are expected to ambulate, sit in a chair, maintain hygiene with assistance of a nurse. We provide education on patients' diagnosis. It is common to monitor strict I's and O's, daily weights, vitals every 2 hours, monitor telemetry strips, notify the MD for changes, perform ECGs, manage pain, maintain O2 saturations, handle BIPAPs, and work closely with other hospital interdisciplinary teams. We often call or receive reports and transfer patients on and off units to new units, CT, or MRI.
