INCIDENT SAFETY OFFICER

  • As the Incident Safety Officer (ISO) I function as a dual role in incident management, responsible for monitoring operations and advising the Incident Commander (IC) on safety matters, as well as functioning as a hybrid Incident Commander (IC). The ISO role oversees the safety of all personnel, mitigates risks, and influence, alter or suspend operations when necessary. Coupled with my capabilities of IMS 300 and ongoing role in overseeing training initiatives I am regularly fulfilling duties of the Platoon Chief when unable to adequately manage all aspects of the platoon operations. As well as continuing to function as a Driver Signing Authority and Accident Investigator.
  • Maintained records of all incidents, including accident reports, near misses, and unsafe conditions or acts.
  • Conducted initial incident hazard safety assessments to identify potential hazards and recommended corrective action following the Incident Command (IC) model

  • Operating in the capacity of senior Captain, responsible for overseeing daily responses and operations of Pump, Aerial, and Rescue duties. As well as leading in firefighter development, I am also active as the ISO on regular rotation with a variety of large-scale response experience. In my role as Department Lead for Driver Training and Accident Investigation for 10 years, I am responsible for new apparatus awareness and ongoing training for NFPA 1002 Driver Operator-Pumper, as well as Quint, Aerial, Tanker, and Rescue Apparatus training. Appointed to Fire Department Project Lead for Mid-Rise Wood Construction with partners at corporate and private sector levels, resulting in a broad awareness of vulnerability of all-wood structures. As a result, working on committee for procurement and planning for both current and planned facilities. Attendance at FDIC to participate in discussion on dynamics of lightweight construction, and perils facing fire service personal, as well as an advisor to Canada Wood Council initiatives, Vancouver, BC for panel review of Tall Wood-Mass Timber construction May 2016. Proudly completing Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Road to Mental Readiness Program Leadership.

  • During my secondment I was tasked to assist with the 2024 education and experience programming needs, focused on but not limited to, specialty operation rope rescue (high and low angle), ice/water rescue, hazardous materials response, medical, Fire Ground Ops, pump ops, and driver training. In addition to these duties, I was responsible for developing and deploying Trench Rescue, Elevator Rescue, SOG’s TB’s and practical deployment and signoffs. My experience in training was also highlighted by coordinating the departmental accreditation for Rural Water Shuttle, with FUS, overseeing Volunteer and Career, as well as Mutual Aid Deployment. I am the chair for the departmental EV and Lithium Ion response deployment program, which has been successfully deployed with our mutual aid partners Hamilton Fire Department.

ACTING CAPTAIN, Fire Suppression

  • Provided ongoing coaching and mentoring to fire suppression crews, primarily in the capacity of Captain on primary response Pump/Rescue and Quint apparatus, as well as Acting Captain on secondary Aerial and Rescue apparatus, and finally as a 1st Class firefighter. Providing administrative support to scheduling and coordinating training for both Career and Volunteer fire fighters. Ongoing duties involved developing of fire suppression staff, performance evaluations, and the ongoing regular station duties of an Officer. Completed both IMS 200 as well as Blue Card Incident Command Program. Created departmental Defensive Driving Program to address potential non-compliance, and on-going role of Vehicle Accident Investigator.

FIREFIGHTER, 1st Class

  • Fire suppression duties including urban and rural pump operations, auto-extrication, rail line incidents, water/ice/swift water incidents, and high angle and slope operations. Public Education programs, preschool, primary and secondary schools, as well as vulnerable sectors of community. Fire Prevention smoke alarm audits and high occupancy and high risks preplanning and inspections. OFM Pump Operator Trainer Designation (2008). Defibrillation and EMR Trainer Designation (2009). Ministry of Transportation Signing Authority, Air Brake “Z” endorsement Instructor (2010). Particular attention was given to public education, working on home audit fire alarm program. This participation lead to a 6-week delivery of Fire Safety Public Education through Sioux Hudson Literacy Council, delivering online to remote First Nations communities.
