Work History

Transcription Team Member

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team
01.2023 - Current
  • I have worked in IHIT since 2023, on the transcription team.
  • The work consists of translations from Punjabi to English. I also do English-to-English transcriptions.
  • IHIT allowed me to learn more about the policing world.
  • Working alongside police officers inspired me to start my career in policing.
  • I am currently still working in IHIT, and I will be going into a special project. The special project is a national, ongoing file that requires individuals to proofread all the work being sent to the crown. Making sure all the information is accurate, because these documents will be used in the hearing.
  • This will be a full-time commitment. Four days a week, 10 hours.

Security

Commissionaires
Surrey, Canada
01.2021 - Current
  • Company Overview: Commissionaires is a security company that is hired by government facilities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also hires security for their buildings from the company, Commissionaires.
  • Currently, I work at the E-Division on the security team.
  • I have performed supervisory roles, patrolling roles, front desk roles, and camera room roles.
  • Making sure the best service is provided to the public and staff. Each role has specific rules to follow. I have mainly worked at the front desk because of my communication skills. I have dealt with many conflicts where I had to deescalate the situation. Receiving phone calls and aiding in providing the individual with the best information possible. Some calls require more critical thinking when the caller is being more aggressive.
  • I used to work weekdays; however, since I moved into IHIT, I have had to reduce my days. Now, I work two days on the weekend. The shifts are eight hours long.

  • I worked as a registration officer for Elections Canada in 2019.
  • I was at the front table greeting individuals who came to put their vote in and check if they were able to vote.
  • Moreover, this job was stressful when the individuals arrived at the wrong location, which required patience from my end and theirs when filling out forms.
  • This job required speed and communication skills.
  • I worked from 7 am to 11 pm at night.
  • I was able to translate efficiently.

Volunteer Experience

  • Jumpstart program, I volunteered with the Jumpstart program, which involves working with children. The task of the volunteer is to set up activities and aid the child in increasing their communication skills.
  • Kwantlen Park, A lot of dance volunteering. I volunteered to teach Bhangra every semester, two whole days in high school to the Physical Ed classes. This did require me to miss all my classes for the day and dedicate my time to the students at Kwantlen Park. I also volunteered to perform at elementary schools and teach young children Bhangra, as well as the history of the dance Bhangra. This allows children to be more connected with different religions and cultures.
  • SFU Bhangra Team: I taught Bhangra in university at SFU. I was an executive member. My role was media director. I made sure all media pages ran smoothly. Creating dance content and getting community engagement. I also did various performances and hosted events. SFU Bhangra promoted health and fitness. SFU Bhangra is also well known to provide back to the community.
  • SAVE: Students Against Violence Everywhere. This is a group I joined in my early years at SFU. I was one of the media executive members. SAVE hosted events, such as, self-defense classes for free at University of British Columbia. SAVE also created safety kits, for students on campus. One year, we created health kits for the homeless community, where we provided hygiene related equipment. The winters can be harsh, therefore, the kits had blankets and gloves. Watching the individuals receive the kit and them thanking us for our hard-work and seeing their smiles was one of the greatest parts of participating in this event.
  • Humanitarian Society of Vancouver: I volunteered in this group during early university years. I volunteered in cleaning the parks event. Where we went to the park and picked up any garbage. Making sure the environment was safe for chidren to play in. And helping create ideas for future events.
