I was captain of my college hockey team, which meant that I had to learn how to motivate and inspire my teammates. And while leading a communications team isn't quite the same as leading a group of athletes, the basic principles are the same. At the end of the day, it's all about effective communication, setting goals and expectations, and inspiring people to do their best work.
And making sure the team was well stocked up on smelling salts.
There's nothing quite like being on the ice in the final minutes of a close game when your team is down by one goal. That's when everything you've practiced comes into play and you have to trust your teammates (and yourself) to make the right decisions under pressure. In my line of work, there are always tight deadlines and last-minute projects, so being able to stay calm under pressure is essential.
