Preschool Teacher's Assistant

La Escuela Bilingual
Alameda
09.2022 - 10.2025
  • A teacher assistant at My Escuela Bilingual. My focus is to make sure the children are safe, most importantly, having fun, and learning their fine and gross motor skills.. My daily schedule from Monday through Friday looks like this: arriving at 9:30 AM, having circle time where we sing the days of the week, the weather, the months, and the days, all in Spanish and English. We then move on to do our crafting project, which takes about 30 minutes. The next 30 minutes would be spent getting the kids to use the restroom before we step outside for playtime. During playtime outside, we allow the kids to be free and interact with each other while the teachers observe and make sure everyone is safe. After that, the children have lunch while the teachers supervise, and after, they go on to have a nap for 2 hours. We finish the day by giving the kids a snack and doing some number counting, going over shapes, colors, and the alphabet, both in Spanish and English. The kids then go outside to play while they wait for their parents to pick them up. My job was to make sure the kids felt like the school was their second home, and that they could always come to us if they needed help or wanted to share their emotions. My goal is to also make sure they are striving academically to move on to their next chapter, which would be TK or kindergarten. The ages I teach are 3 to 4, but I am surrounded by 2 to 5-year-olds as well, and I help take care of the children of those ages.

Youth Counselor

Fred Finch Youth Center Mental Health
Oakland
08.2020 - 09.2022
  • Designed to complement Fred Finch housing programs, the transition programs provide vocational and educational connections, mental health support, and linkage to other community supports. Many of the youth accessing these services are former foster children, who bring with them histories of abuse, neglect, and complex emotional and physical health needs. With the development of the school-linked wellness center on site at Fred Finch’s main Oakland campus. There are two houses. I work at the new Yosemite house, which is the crisis house. Kids come from hospitals for being a danger to themselves or family members. We teach these kids that it’s okay to feel what they feel, but there need to be coping skills that need to be learned so we can help transition them back home to be safe. Our goal is to make sure these kids feel safe, and can trust the staff to talk and help them with anything they need. We have a structured schedule at our house, which we teach the kids about. They have structured activity time, chill time, dinner, chores, ILS, hygiene, and then finally bedtime. My goal is to make sure these kids are ready to go to their families, and for them to learn new skills to take back home.
