After almost 10 years of Nursing, it is time to work with books! I LOVE books! I have been shopping at the same Barnes & Noble in Long Beach at the Marina Pacifica Shopping Center with my boys since 2000.
While my boys were attending McGaugh elementary school, I ran the Scholastic Book Fair. It was my favorite school event because I knew the power of reading. It can change lives and open up the world in a way that almost no other medium can.
Also, I was lucky to be apart of the Jesters Program at McGaugh elementary. A group of Mom's who, working along side the media center and the teachers, came up with an idea to restock the library with new books, honor students and help parents celebrate their students achievements. A group of us dressed in elaborate Jester costumes made by one of the mom's, would tell jokes(Jester Jokes), juggle (Jester Juggle), tap (Jester Taps), blow bubbles( Jester Bubbles) and laugh (Jester Giggles), our way into the classroom. We would read the specially selected book to the student as they sat next to us and held "the jester staff". The student would get to take the book home to read for the week and then return the book to the school's media center for all to enjoy. It was a win, win situation. The student got honored for their achievement and the school received new books for all to use. I was very proud to be part of this fun, positive and literacy promoting group.
I have a very eclectic background. After growing up in the Bay Area, I was accepted to UCLA. While I was completing my Bachelors in Psychology, I was apart of the UCLA cheerleader team for football and basketball. We had a hectic schedule traveling all over the country, while continuing practicing and keeping up our grades. I had a part-time job on campus and was also in a sorority.
I met my husband who played on the UCLA basketball team. After graduation, we went to Barcelona. I modeled and took Spanish lessons, while my Fiance' played basketball. After a year in Barcelona, he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. For 10 years we spent the "off season" in Los Angeles and the NBA seasons in Chicago, New Jersey, San Antonio and in Los Angeles. During our time in the NBA, the player wives supported different philanthropies. The skills I developed working with the wives, the players and the charities would help me excell as a communicator, a team player and an advocate for those less fortunate.
After his retirement, we moved to Seal Beach. I became a "professional mom". I was a room Mom, team Mom, silent Auction Chair, PTA, and a Scholastic Book Fair Chair. I did whatever I could do to help. During this time, I also became involved with The Long Beach Memorial Children's Hospital Auxiliary. We would celebrate the kids in the hospital by working hands on with them on a craft in the Childlife room. The kids that had a birthday that month would also receive presents, usually books, art material and small plush animals. Our primary revenue came from running the hospital giftshop, 2 craft fairs, 2 bake sales and a Fashion show. All the proceeds went to Millers Children's hospital.
After my divorce, I went back to school to become a Nurse. I had always wanted to have my own career. It was definitely one of the most challenging accomplishments of my life. Nursing has been an amazing profession. My patient's taught me so much through their resilience, optimism and grace. I am grateful to have been able to work along side some truly amazing, skilled, empathetic teammates who made me so much better. It was my honor to work with the patients in the Oncology Unit, I learned that life is so fragile and we are all on the same playing field. Cancer is oblivious to race, religion, culture or age.
Besides my boys, my true passion has always been books! I am lucky that I now have the opportunity to do what would make me most happy. I would be thrilled to work at my local Barnes & Noble in the Marina Pacifica Shopping Center. I enjoy reading fiction and love all books. But the children's section of the store gets me very excited! I would love the opportunity to help run the children's section of your magical store.
