Work History

General Investigator

RCMP Sherwood Park
11.2010 - Current
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and RCMP policies: As a regular member, I have actively acquired the knowledge of federal laws, provincial laws, bylaws and policies within the RCMP in the jurisdiction in which I worked. I have implemented and followed these laws during the course of my career while engaging with the public, making arrests, writing production order and warrants, laying appropriate charges and writing tickets. I know where to look up federal laws in the Criminal code and analyze the information, I can navigate through the Provincial offences and use the legislation as required during the course of my actions. I can look up policy as required and had the opportunity to write some policy in 2020 when I was asked to research the program and the RCMP policies around Restorative Justice. I researched all legislation and policies involving youth and the judicial system. I created appropriate forms necessary to enforce these policies and legislation and implemented the program into the detachment, coordinating meetings with probation, the youth justice committee and Staff Sargeant and then wrote the policies that coordinated with the program and how it was to implemented.
  • Knowledge of victim services and intimate partner violence theories: Over the course of my career I have worked on many domestic violence calls from attending the call, laying charges, risk assessments, to court and follow up after court. I have sat alongside victim services during meetings with victims as they prepare for court and in the court house. I have also taken the domestic violence investigation course and Relationship Violence team training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally; As an operational police officer, I spoke to the general public on an everyday basis during the course the job from talking to complainants, victims, suspects, and witnesses from old to young. I obtained written statements, oral statements and audio video statements. I worked in Devon detachment where I worked on my own. Sometimes I needed to get someone into the back of my car and they were much larger than I. I had to use my communication skills and was able talk large muscular men, mentally challenged women and people tweeking in the middle of the street into my car without having to go hands on. I have spoken to people having a mental episode or just needed to someone to talk to. I pride myself on my communication skills and my ability to be empathetic to the cause. I have also taken interview courses within the RCMP to take statement from suspects and children. I talk to the public and outside resources on the phone and communicate regularly through e-mail while keeping the complainants updated on files and obtaining information from professional organizations such as bank, crypto exchanges, businesses, etc. I currently write at least 1 to 2 Judicial Authorizations a month but sometimes more. I use the police data system to write my reports for everything I do on the report and have many comments on the detail of my reports over the years.
  • Ability to engage effectively with clients and stakeholders while managing conflicting demands and prioritize my own work in order to meet operational demands: While I am not operational as a police officer, I still maintain a lot of contact with the general public. During the course of a working day, I receive files from both the Corporal and occasionally as I deal with clients that attend the front counter. If a client attends the front and wants to speak to an officer or has questions about a file, the front counter staff ask someone from my unit to come up front and talk to them. Sometimes it is just a confused elderly person that has gone to the wrong detachment or someone who is terribly upset over their significant financial loss and needs consoling. I collect information them, take statements (written or audio video) and provide information all while managing my many fraud files, writing production orders, communicating with banks, Liaison Officers, other clients on the phone or emails, local businesses, other police agencies and many more. When something comes up that requires immediate attention either at the front counter, assisting other members in the unit or operational members, I am able to determine what is priority and my own operation demands are always on par.
  • I have dealt with vulnerable and sensitive clients throughout my years as an RCMP Member. I am very empathetic towards the clients and in most cases, was able to establish rapport and trust with them. Those clients involved, children, victims of domestic violence and sexual assaults. I have taken interviews from these clients and monitored these types of statement for other members to assist with direction and feedback during the interviews.
