  • Successfully employed the plasma thermal spray process to deposit Cr2O3 and Al2O3-TiO2 coatings onto mild steel base plates.
  • Coating Thickness: Measured and reported the average thickness of Cr2O3 and Al2O3-TiO2 coatings, which were 151 microns and 152 microns, respectively.
  • Conducted microhardness tests to evaluate the mechanical properties of the coatings. Found that Cr2O3 coating exhibited a remarkable 76.33% higher microhardness compared to the base metal, while Al2O3-TiO2 had a 57.31% lower microhardness at the surface due to porosity.
  • Microstructure Analysis: Utilized optical microscopy and XRD analysis to investigate the microstructure of the coatings. Confirmed the presence of Cr2O3 in the eskolaite phase for Cr2O3 coating and α-Al2O3, γ-Al2O3, and Rutile TiO2 phases for Al2O3-TiO2 coating.
  • Wear Resistance: Conducted wear tests and revealed that Cr2O3 coating had the highest wear resistance, while Al2O3-TiO2 coating exhibited lower wear resistance compared to the substrate due to factors like porosity.
  • SEM Analysis: Examined worn surfaces using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and identified the presence of pits, pockmarks, and surface roughness as evidence of adhesion as the primary wear mechanism.
  • Future Scope: Outlined potential areas for future research, including exploring different coating techniques, assessing the coatings' performance on various substrates, investigating oxidation resistance, studying slurry erosion resistance, and utilizing simulation and modeling techniques.
