Summary

As Managing Editor for several Toronto magazines over a span of 25 years, I worked on every facet of magazine publishing, from creating the original editorial lineups, to assigning and proofreading all editorial, writing all display copy and news stories, through to marking final corrections on printer proofs.

  • I was the Managing Editor of four home-based monthly magazines, owned by Publisher Michael Rosset, distributed in The Toronto Star and Globe & Mail: HOMES, CondoLife, Active Life and Reno + Decor
  • The challenge for me as Managing Editor was juggling the many conflicting demands and multiple deadlines, as the company expanded and more magazines were added to the lineup

Senior Editor

Tribute Magazine
03.2000 - 04.2003
  • I was hired to transform what was essentially a handout at Cineplex movie theatres promoting upcoming films into a thick, glossy monthly magazine
  • The new version of Tribute featured film reviews and original interviews as well as coverage of the Toronto entertainment scene, launch parties, premieres and fashion spreads

  • The publisher (Richard Rotman) and I worked together to create a more uptown weekly arts and entertainment newspaper that would compete with the decidedly downtown NOW Magazine
  • I was able to utilize my previous experience and positive relationships with feature writers, Art and Film critics, Photographers and Stylists to build my own stable of creative talent

Assistant to Head of PR

  • Worked directly for PR head Gerry Young as his Assistant
  • Set up press interviews with visiting U.S and UK authors, and helped to set up national publicity campaigns for Canadian authors
  • Later, in 2011, did research, copy edited and proofread Young's autobiography (Pop Goes The Weasel: Rock And Roll Off The Record) about his years as PR Director at Polygram Canada
  • Also did layout and set book up so each chapter was an amusing, private story about behind the scenes Toronto leg of the press tours of the storied musicians Young took around town in the 1980s.
