Work History

Global Industry Technical Consultant – Power – Heavy Industries

Rockwell Automation
10.2010 - Current
  • My current role has extended the scope of my product coverage from medium voltage to all Rockwell Automation power products including low voltage adjustable speed drives, motor control centers, etc.. The position involves technical and design support of power related products internationally and most recently been extended to the integration of equipment utilizing logic controllers as a distributed control system.
  • Facilitated knowledge transfer among team members by leading training sessions on new tools, techniques, or industry best practices relevant to the role of Technical Consultant.
  • Enhanced system performance by identifying and resolving technical issues through troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Managed multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing deadlines effectively under pressure through meticulous organization skills and time management.
  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams to complete complex projects on time and within budget constraints, meeting or exceeding project requirements.

Special Applications Engineer

Rockwell Automation
10.2004 - 10.2010
  • This position involved moving to Calgary Alberta in order to provide technical support to the Western Canada sales team to pursue and close medium voltage orders. Key duties were customer training in the form of lunch and learns, small meetings, etc. in order to familiarize end users with Rockwell Automation equipment, facilitate conceptual design and to assist in the design and execution of Mega Projects such as Shell Albian Sands, Syncrude, Kearl, Conoco Phillips Surmont and Suncor.

Special Application Engineer

Rockwell Automation
10.2002 - 10.2004
  • This role involved internal technical support of the application engineering group along with business development. One of the key projects during this period involved the design and utilization of MV drives for marine propulsion. This was a collaborative investigation along with Rolls Royce.

Application Engineering Group Manager

Rockwell Automation
01.2000 - 10.2002
  • Was appointed Engineering Group Leader of the Medium Voltage Drive Application Engineering team. Responsibilities included the training, scheduling and technical support of approximately 12 Application Engineering Specialists ranging from Electrical Engineering Technologists to Professional Engineers. Design of medium voltage CSI drive systems and medium Voltage starters was the responsibility of the department. Also included in my application engineering team were 4 electrical draftspersons as well as 4 mechanical drafting resources.
  • An additional responsibility is participation (as the engineering team leader) in the development of the next generation of medium voltage CSI drive. This is an ongoing assignment that began in 1998 and will be completed in 2001. Definition of design requirements as well as assistance in selection and ratings of components are some of the tasks required.

Senior Application Engineering Specialist

Rockwell Automation
10.1995 - 02.2000
  • Duties were to prepare bills of material, electrical drawings, supervise the mechanical drafting of the specific order and to write any necessary PLC software needed to support the turn key drive system being supplied to the customer. Drive system design requires an understanding of transformers, motors and VFD equipment as well as the loads that this equipment will be controlling in order to provide a suitable system to meet the customer’s requirements. Technical support is provided to all aspects of the business from marketing through to product support and the customer. Assigned the most challenging Medium Voltage CSI drive orders for domestic and international customers resulting in numerous successes and written recognition from customers and management. Motor starting analysis to determine the suitability of various types of motor controllers on different motor / load combinations and their effect on the customer’s distribution system were also performed on a regular basis. Recognized as an authority both within organization but in the field on the application and design of MV drive systems.

Project Engineering Specialist

Rockwell Automation
11.1991 - 10.1995
  • Duties were to provide conceptual design and project / commercial management of medium voltage drive systems. This included the preparation of project schedules using chart paths, participating in customer meetings and correspondence as well as the assignment of work to the application engineering group. A major success in this position was the successful completion (on time, on budget) of the first liquid cooled medium voltage drive produced by the company. Additional functions provided include running distribution system harmonic analysis and the design of the required harmonic filters resulting from the analysis to mitigate the harmonics produced by variable frequency drive systems. Motor starting analysis to determine the suitability of various types of motor controllers on different motor / load combinations and their effect on the customer’s distribution system was also performed on a regular basis.

Application Engineering Specialist

Rockwell Automation
10.1983 - 11.1991
  • Duties were to prepare bills of material, electrical drawings, supervise the mechanical drafting of Medium Voltage Starter(s). Technical support was provided to all aspects of the business from marketing through to product support and customer. Part of job responsibility was to commission the equipment designed since the organization did not have a product support department at this time. Became recognized authority on medium voltage equipment within and outside of the organization. Was selected as the medium voltage design expert to consult with drive design group to collaborate on the design of the company’s first medium voltage CSI drive in 1989.

PLC System Engineering Specialist

Rockwell Automation
04.1981 - 10.1983
  • Duties were to prepare bills of material, electrical drawings, supervise the mechanical drafting and to write the necessary software for turnkey programmable logic controller applications. Technical support was provided to all aspects of the business from marketing through to product support and customer. Part of job responsibility was to commission the equipment and the software written for the project when required.

Accomplishments

During the course of my career, have been involved in and led projects which were key to the success of the Rockwell Automation Medium Voltage Business. Notable projects were

First liquid cooled drive which was designed in the Cambridge facility. The successful completion and implementation of this drive for Shell Canada ensured the continued manufacturing of the Medium Voltage drive and success of the MV Drive Business

Application engineering lead supporting the development of the PowerFlex 7000 MV Drive product. This was an innovative drive design was a leading edge product introduced in 2000 and remains in production to this day in 2025

Development of the design which won the CNOOC Bohai Bay project. A project which involved about 300 PF7000 MV Drives on FPSOs deployed in the South China Sea. The design concept which was superior to any competing offerings. The magnitude of the project led to several years of production in our Cambridge MV facility.
