  • Streamline HR processes for increased efficiency, reducing time spent on administrative tasks.
  • Responsible for managing all HR activities for staff, faculty, research staff, and student employees. Work closely with faculty and staff, particularly other members of administration services, to provide high-level HR support for a broad range of faculty, staff and student employment and appointment matters.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the department's HR activities are in line with UBC policies, procedures, best practices and collective agreements; work closely with Faculty Relations and APSC HR in order to clearly communicate expectations, procedures and objectives to the appropriate members of the department. Also liaises with other units, such as the Office of Research Services, Financial Services, Undergraduate Office, and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies as needed.
  • Provide high-level advice and recommendations to faculty members and staff managers on terms of employment, employee recruitment, leave and benefits entitlements, position classifications, compensation, annual reviews and other HR issues of a complex or non-routine nature.
  • Facilitates hiring of term-appointed research faculty and trainees, such as research associates, postdoctoral fellows and visiting faculty or scientists.
  • Investigates and provides advice to resolve staff and student staff payroll problems such as retroactive pay, late payments, etc., in response to queries from student, supervisors, centers and program administrators.
  • Financial tasks such as JV's, transfers, VISA reconciliation, invoice payments, supplier setup, honoraria payments, reimbursements and claims
  • Exercise sound, independent decision-making while providing managerial HR support in a large, complex, growing department. Effective at prioritizing a range of duties, including many that are time sensitive. Errors in judgment, misinterpretation of UBC policies or collective agreements, missed deadlines or ineffective communication could negatively impact faculty, staff and students, as well as harm the department's reputation within the broader academic community.
  • As the primary point of contact for HR matters within the academic unit, I must be able to identify urgent matters of high importance and independently redirect or resolve enquiries and issues as appropriate.
