Working at Funvilla Guelph required strong leadership skills. I was in charge of a staff of many ages from 15 years old to 32 years old. Supervisors are responsible for overseeing normal daily operations such as managing the staff, and ensuring everyone is doing their designated jobs for the day to make sure that our services are carried out effectively. I also helped develop and implement new policies such as our sanitizing policies which is very important in such a busy facility. I assisted my manager in coordinating schedules and communicating with the parents and guardians of the children who come to Funvilla to make sure they filled out our waivers and understood their legal obligation to watch their children.
On the other hand, working as a server in hospitality involves excellent customer service skills. With my experience both in Canada and in New Zealand, I learned more about hospitality than I would have if I only served in Canada. Some of my tasks were taking orders, serving food and beverages, and occasionally making beverages at Chesters Bar and Grill. While doing all of these tasks, also make sure that I am meeting guests' experiences to ensure a good experience for them. As a server, I learned to have excellent communication skills, multitasking, and working well under extreme pressure. This could be shown through my time at Longroom in New Zealand. Longroom is a bustling restaurant during the day and a very busy club at night time, during the nighttime hours I learned skills like how to carry very heavy trays of upwards of 20 drinks at a time through a crowd of people dancing. I was responsible for maintaining a clean host stand and sections, handling all payments of my section, and handling credit card tabs for tables $1000+.
Both of these roles strengthen my interpersonal skills, the ability to work with a team, and how to be empathetic to the customer experience. While these jobs' responsibilities differ, both of these positions involve creating a positive experience for customers whether they are children or adults.
