Volunteering

For the last 5 years, I have volunteered as a patient advocate and educator for patients with autonomic nervous system disorders such as POTS and dysautonomia. These condition are poorly understood by the majority of the medical community, and navigating the medical system in order to obtain appropriate testing, diagnosis, and treatment is very difficult. I assist these patients by educating them about these health conditions, teaching them how to collect relevant data for their doctors, and I assist in finding local specialists who diagnose and treat their health conditions. I am passionate about this work, as many of these patients are completely disabled and bed-bound without appropriate treatment. The average time it takes for a patient with POTS or dysautonomia to get diagnosed and treated is 8 years. Many of the patients I volunteer with are able to obtain a diagnosis and treatment within 3-6 months. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, they are able to return to a normal, active life!

I am currently pursuing my Masters in Social Work, with the aim of becoming an Clinical Medical Social Worker and case manager for this patient population.
