Rahaf Al Aboud Philosophy

  • My philosophy about early childhood education began to grow when I stopped for a moment and saw the instinct of readiness to learn that is present in children, which constantly pushes them to develop their abilities if there is an appropriate learning environment around them, and that created inside me a motivation to start searching for sources that would give me knowledge about everything related to the child, which the early childhood education program at Mohawk College is one of them, and which it has the certainly has a fundamental role in developing my philosophy which currently made of five values.
  • One of the best values that shaped my philosophy is my belief that every teacher should have the ability to create an environment that reflects the image and culture of every person to which it belongs, especially here in the Canadian societies in which I have integrated, and transferred what I learned from them to the early childhood education environment in which I was trained. "ECEC programs have the potential to be a major means of providing environments in which young children can positively develop ideas about diversity as a foundation for lifelong tolerance and acceptance of difference" (Martha Friendly, Nina Prabhu, 2010). I have known that Canada is one of the most culturally diverse peoples, It has many cultures, languages and dialects, Accordingly, I moved away from the idea of forming a one-style environment that restricts children’s learning, and expanded my horizons of thinking about the opportunities that I could create that would enable the child and his family to see themselves within the environment, for example, this can be done by welcoming and accepting that the child uses his mother tongue during communication With his peers or by inviting parents to put something from their culture within the environment.
  • In the early childhood education environment, the educator needs to move away from the role of the expert and take the role of the participant, because if he masters these roles, he will allow himself to search and see all the accurate information that can provide the benefit that develops his skills also that may be very suitable for children’s learning. "Educators can gain a deeper understanding of children's developing skills and evolving learning styles and can support new learning by collaborating with children in continuous and shared discovery and thinking” (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2014, p. 35). This is done, for example, by looking at recent articles on the Internet. Or by giving the children an opportunity to explore solutions to their queries, for example, if the educator descends to the level of children and embodied the role of a cooperative person who is ready to search with them for answers to these questions. These ideas I did not know before, and they were among the information I received at my university through studying Philosophy & Curriculum Design course, also, I have already used them in my personal and professional life with people older and younger than me, and I found that they began to express everything inside them with confidence. This became clear to me when they embodied in front of me the roles of highly educated experts and when they began to think deeply to search for answers to their inquiries and my questions.
  • I developed my third philosophy based on what I studied in the inclusion in the ECE Classroom, Advocacy, Ethics and Policy course, which states that early childhood teachers must have the necessary skills that reflect fairness, this is because they will need to use them at all times when dealing with parents, children, and educators, or even when preparing for the physical environment, "Registered early childhood educators (RECE) intentionally create and maintain environments that support children’s play and learning as well as contribute to a sense of belonging and overall well-being and they make sure that ensure that the environment is safe and accessible for all children and families. They also ensure that the environment reflects the values and diversity of the community” (CECE, 2017). these skills may be a permanent self-review, and that so I can overcome the feeling of prejudice when there is constant interaction with family or colleagues and these people have a culture like my culture. Pay attention to the way I speak when I talk to children, and This is because children have different abilities, for example, for children who have delayed speech disease, I must repeat my sentences and keep them simple when I talk to them. getting used to the continuous renewal of materials in the environment in a deliberate manner that suits the abilities of all children, which may change constantly, and we can do this, for example, by bringing materials with varying difficulties from time to time.
  • My fourth philosophy was formed through my personal experiences that I lived in my daily life, which included complex and simple situations, which proved to me that one of the most important elements that help in achieving goals continuously is learning how to communicate with others responsively and positively, Building and maintaining caring and responsive relationships with children, families and colleagues are fundamental to the practice of RECESS (CECE,2017). and this is what I worked on to achieve my goal to succeeded in my professional life when I welcomed parents and children and tried to talk to them daily, which helped parents and children get to know me more and made them accept me, and gave them a sense of comfort while dealing with me,"Registered early childhood educators (RECES) understand that strong, positive relationships contribute to healthy child development and are necessary for children's well-being and learning"(CECE,2017) I sat with the children and listened to them and got to know their different interests, and this made them express what was inside them Without hesitation and helped them get as much learning as possible, I gave myself a chance to listen to what my mentor had to say, which improved my professional performance on all levels, among them, recognizing, how communication positively affects those around me, for example, My mentor's feedback made me monitor my tone of voice while talking to children when different situations occur.
  • The fifth value that shaped my philosophy was formed through my study of the various courses that I took in an early childhood education program such as Family Dynamics and Learning Environment Courses, and this value is centered around that the educational environment should be a reliable and easily accessible resource, and this source can provide all the information parents need to reach organizations that can provide healthy food, and treatment, like "mission services organization which they are aiming to serve all of the community members with dignity and provide as much choice as possible, including culturally appropriate food" (Mission services, 1956) or even can be specialized to help with other issues Such as issues of separation, and how to support the child in this case. This can be done by welcoming the parents, explaining to them what services the center can provide other than childcare, and then encouraging them to come forward and seek help when they need it. It must also be easily available to the child to be under his leadership and provide services that support the child’s development in all aspects of his development, for example, it can be implemented by providing him or her with appropriate food without forcing them to eat anything or provide various materials or activities that support his education and that he chooses by expressing his interests.
  • Finally, I want to briefly mention the values that shaped my philosophy, to be one of the educators who have to possess the ability to create an environment where the child and his family can see their culture and themselves in it, who move away from the role of the expert and be a participating educator and is ready to develop the skills to create an educational environment that reflects justice, the educator who is capable and receptive to building positive relationships with children and parents and colleagues, the educator who makes the access to the environment easy and that to receive services other than child care, and that the educational environment is available to provide care for children, taking into account that to be its aspects are under their leadership.
