Mobile Radiologic Technologist Responsibilities

  • Travel to various skilled nursing, rehab, mental health, post-acute, etc. facilities using a company provided van housing a portable SR-130 x-ray machine, digital panel, computer, PPE, lead apron/shield, and all other necessary equipment, to perform diagnostic x-rays on patient's at their bedside. My role is crucial in preventing unnecessary hospital visits for patients bedridden, post operation, or in mental health crisis. I go to the patient so the patient does not have to go to the hospital.
  • Use of PACS, Emergent Connect, and Viztek imaging and communications/charting softwares
  • Critical thinking and being extremely adaptable as each patient, room setup, exam, priority, and facility is different.
  • Problem solving when technical issues arise
  • Maintain HIPAA, Patient Rights, infection control safety guidelines, covid precautions, and all rules and regulations regarding radiation safety (ALARA), etc
  • Work alone when no facility help is available. Involves moving patient, holding digital IR or patient position when ncessary.

Lynchburg General Hospital, owned by Centra Health, is a non profit Level II trauma and stroke center/ER, and outpatient facility servicing 900,000 people across Central Virginia; it serves as a teaching hospital and is where I obtained majority of my clinical experience. This hospital houses two modern Siemens Somatom Definition Edge scanners (single source, multi-slice) that include cardiac, 3D volume rendering, and MIPS/MPR reconstruction softwares. LGH utilizes Medrad/Stellant autoinjectors to administer contrast, Cerner (Powerchart/Capacity) software as the EHR, and PACS to store and move images. Perform wide variety of high quality CT scans in both routine/outpatient and emergent/code environments.

  • Perform charge duties as needed (usually 1-2x/week)
  • Assess quality of images and ensure imaging outcome assessment meets departmental standards. Metrics include positioning, dose, artifacts, MPR/MIP reconstructions, imaging protocols, and image adequacy.
  • Effectively communicate with patients to collect medical history, perform contrast screening (if applicable), obtain consent as required per exam and facility preparation protocol.
  • Perform venipuncture.
  • Calibrate and perform QC measures on scanner.
  • Position patient, monitor their well-being during exams, recognize discomfort or medical problems, and take appropriate action.
  • Communicate with hospital staff and physicians, respond to questions and needs regarding patients and orders.
  • Practice ALARA and follow ARRT's Code of Ethics.
  • Complete all necessary documentation of patient and exam.
  • Stock/supply rooms with appropriate equipment
  • Answer and respond to phone calls and assist with scheduling exams.
