Work History

Animal Research Technician

University Of Alberta
08.2022 - 02.2024

Coordinated to ensure 5 animal research trials/projects were completed as per the protocol and scheduled timelines. My roles included.

  • Pressure-washed nursery rooms and made necessary adjustments that ensured feeders, pens, drinkers, and ventilation systems are ready for impending trials.
  • Assisted in farrowing rooms during weaning, where more than 600 piglets were sorted by body weight and litter size and placed in different nursery rooms and pens.
  • Performed pig selections based on their health, growth and feed efficiency resulting to availability of over 500 healthy piglets for use during growth performance study.
  • Organized utilization of University feed processing equipment to process more than 12 metric tons of feed, saving around $10 for every 1000 kg of feed processed.
  • Allocated experimental diets and ensured pigs were fed on a daily and timely basis that ensured the efficient and successful implementation of growth and digestibility trials.
  • Measured feed efficiency, feed intake and growth response of over 500 pigs that saw the successful determination of growth performance of weaned pigs fed different test diets in 2 growth trials.
  • Collected digesta and feces samples, processed and performed laboratory analysis that saw the successful determination of nutrient availability in over 13 feed ingredients fed to pigs in 2 different digestibility studies.
  • · Maintained the incision wounds of more piglets, fed them, and gave them the appropriate medication as directed by the veterinarian, resulting successful healing of 20 piglets that underwent surgery.
  • Contributed to reports and manuscript writing that resulted in submission of 2 preliminary reports to the financing organizations for an assessment of the project's development and publication of 3 articles in the peer-reviewed journals.
  • Maintained study records by updating data, and sample collection templates and guidelines, entering the collected for storage into the computer files, and placing trial in the appropriate trial binders that ensured easy future accessibility and reference by other team members.
  • Trained one undergraduate student, collaboratively worked with other team members on other projects and assisted four graduate students with their master's degree projects, enabling them to successfully complete their thesis projects and gain the necessary skills for handling and gathering digesta samples from surgically canulated pigs.
