Through my personal practice of this system of yoga, I have come to learn that if we practice the science of yoga, which is useful to the entire human community and which yields happiness both here and hereafter – if we practice it without fail, we will then attain physical, mental and spiritual happiness, and our minds will flood towards the Self.
Writing is not simply something that I do, it is who I am.
Volunteering is a way of learning to make our lives into a process of just giving and being willing. Not just willing to do this or that, simply willing. Living a life in service to others/to this earth is the high form of a life well lived.
I was lucky enough to grow up in a household of three grandaunts, an aunt, a grandmother and a mother, all of whom had an insatiable love of cooking and enjoyed cooking not only for our household but also for the community. Cooking was a language they spoke to those they loved and cared about.
For me one of the best feelings was getting non-outdoorsy friends out on the water appreciating nature and feeling better for it. But the solace and mindfulness that comes from kayaking on your own is also very rewarding. You can paddle at your own pace and absorb your surroundings, feeling at one with the world.
When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a child today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.
I love creating. Creativity is the path to stripping down to our souls and celebrating our quirky nakedness. Creativity allows us to remove unwanted layers of ourselves to reach our inner cores, peeling away until there is nothing to remove and we become whole, one with the power of the universe.
I know firsthand that a garden of any kind is a sanctuary. Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is my instrument of grace.
