  • a. Locating veins suitable for puncture to draw blood using sterilized needles
  • b. Entering orders on LIS (EPIC) and printing labels .Dealing with various types of requisitions.
  • c. Promoting blood specimen integrity for laboratory testing using accurate selection of collection tubes and correct techniques.
  • d. Observes patients for unusual reactions or events to take appropriate actions under established guidelines.
  • e. Has obtained variety of blood samples through Venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.

  • Completed 07 weeks of Work Integrated Learning (Clinical Practicum) at multiple sites of DynaLIFE & Alberta Precision Laboratories, and to date have attained hands-on experience on following: a
  • Got acquainted with laboratory systems and learned how the workflow is managed in a lab setting as well as in hospital settings. b

b Phlebotomy- Performed venipuncture to collect blood sample Inpatient (100 venipunctures) at Grey nun's hospital and Outpatient (130 venipunctures) at Dynalife Belmont Town Centre including the STAT patients and patients in Emergency.

  • Got acquainted with EPIC (Rovers) that runs the entire workflow in the hospital setting.
  • Got hands on experience in venipuncture at Emergency, psychic and maternity ward including pediatric NMS collection.
  • Got familiar with VPL bench too.

c Histology- Performed Presorting of specimen, got familiar with specimen deficiencies, data entry and also worked on case assembly bench.

  • Got familiar with the slide stainer Venache 600, observed grossing done by histotechnicians.

d Cyto Gynea Performed data entry and the receiving process of specimens like the PAP smear-routine, Coloscopy specimens, HPV.

  • Got familiar with the analysers like BD Totalys multiprocessor, BD Totalys TM slide prep, slide labeler, multivival vortexer, coverslip machine.

e Cyto Non Gynea Performed data entry, sorting and worked with non gynea cytological specimens like Peritoneal fluids, Breast cysts, CSF samples, urine samples etc

  • Got hands on experience in pipetting with Eppendorf, decanting, cytospinning, preparing reagents like Carnoy's solution in the biosafety cabinet.
  • Got familiar with Automatic slide stainer and the maintenance of the instrument.
  • Got familiar with the Hologic analyzer that helps in processing Thin Prep NonGyn test and prepares the slide which are further stained and are coverslipped, dried and are send to the cytotechnicians to read them.

f Microbiology-Performed planting of microbiology and mycology specimen

  • Got hands on experience in sorting, accessioning, preparing a variety of samples for testing
  • Got experience in operating various equipment that includes Kiestra, BD Max Molecular equipment, Vitex/VMS, Centrifuges in Microbiology department at DynaLife Base lab in Edmonton.

g Urinalysis- Performed Digital microscopy on Iris and Fit testing on Dianno OCSensor analyzer at DynaLife base lab in Edmonton.

h Hematology- Prepared Malarial blood slides and also worked with the instrument Cellovision at DynaLife base lab in Edmonton.

i Specimen receiving and processing- Performed Specimen receiving, handling, and processing, also performed distribution of specimens at their specific departments at DynaLife base lab in Edmonton.

  • Got familiar with the phoning process and how problems are fixed.
  • Got hands on experience on data entry and obsereved data entry of STAT specimens.

j ECG- Performed ECG's at DynaLife PCC, Belmont Town Centre.
