Settlement Work @ Somali Immigrant Aid : January 2018 - April 2018

  • Developed appropriate treatment plans focusing on each individual's needs.
  • Guided clients through transition to independent living within community.
  • Fill administration forms for newcomers to Canada when they apply for Permanent Residence cards (PR), Canadian citizenship, Provincial Child benefits and housing to provide a smooth integration of newcomer and immigrant individuals in Toronto into the local and wider community.
  • Assisted clients to search for community resources online and referred them when needed in order for newcomers to accomplish their goals as members of the society.
  • Accompanied clients to appointments for Ontario Works, doctors, Connection Housing to assist with interpretation and relevant translations as needed.
  • Calling and talking to Citizenship Immigration Canada agents on phone and speaking on behalf of clients who have minimum understanding of the English language to help in their political integration in Canada
  • Conducted needs assessment and made appropriate and timely referrals to CIC funded and community settlement services when required to in order for newcomers to have access to services that were not available at Somali Immigrant Aid Organization.
  • Facilitated workshops for newcomers’ Somali women who are in the ESL program to broaden their social and professional networks by way of empowering them through workshops.
