Cover Letter

  • Dear Hiring Manager
  • I am writing to apply for the temporary part-time position at the University of Calgary Bookstore for the Fall 2025 back-to-school period. As a third-year UCalgary Computer Science student, I am not only familiar with the campus and its vibrant student culture, but I am also eager to contribute my strong work ethic and interpersonal skills to support the bookstore during its busiest season. I understand that the August 8–September 19 rush is a critical time, and I am confident that my enthusiasm and ability to learn quickly will make me an asset to your team.
  • In my volunteer experiences, I have developed excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills that directly align with the needs of a bookstore role. As a substitute teacher at a high school in Tajikistan, I honed my ability to clearly communicate information and manage tasks under pressure – skills that would help me assist students and parents in finding textbooks or supplies. Additionally, my time as an animal shelter volunteer taught me responsibility and reliability; I often took on night shifts and ensured tasks were completed diligently. This experience also involved organizing supplies and maintaining a clean environment, which parallels the inventory stocking and tidiness required in a retail setting. Furthermore, as a volunteer chess mentor with a youth organization, I regularly interact with children and parents, practicing patience, problem-solving, and friendly service. I believe these experiences demonstrate my capability to provide polite and efficient customer assistance and to work collaboratively with colleagues during the busy back-to-school rush.
  • What particularly excites me about working at the UCalgary Bookstore is the opportunity to help fellow students. I remember my own first days of classes, and I understand how important it is to have approachable and knowledgeable staff in the bookstore. I am ready to work flexible hours and tackle tasks from shelving textbooks to operating the cash register or helping a student find the right course materials. I am confident in my ability to adapt quickly to the bookstore’s procedures and to maintain a positive, team-oriented attitude even during long and hectic days. My multilingual ability in English and Russian (with beginner Spanish) would allow me to assist a diverse range of customers in our campus community.
  • Thank you for considering my application. I am very enthusiastic about the possibility of contributing to the University of Calgary Bookstore team during the back-to-school period. I am available for the entire August–September timeframe and can commit to at least two shifts per week or more as needed. I would welcome the chance to discuss how my skills and experiences can benefit your team. Please feel free to contact me at the phone number or email above to arrange an interview.
  • Sincerely
  • Mukhammd Ashurov
