Milan Barney

I have developed strong responsibility, communication, and organizational skills through a combination of childcare, volunteer service, leadership, and journalism experiences. I provided regular childcare for family and friends, where I managed meal preparation, clothing and diaper changes, cleanup, and bedtime routines while maintaining a safe and structured environment. I also volunteered at a rabbit shelter, supporting daily operations by cleaning enclosures, preparing and restocking food and supplies, assisting with grooming, and maintaining sanitary and organized facilities.

Additionally, I served as a mentor to a high school freshman, offering guidance during their transition into high school through consistent check-ins, academic support, and communication of important deadlines and school updates. I helped coordinate and promote school events to encourage student engagement. As a student reporter in a journalism internship program, I independently developed story ideas, conducted research and interviews, wrote articles for publication, and participated in collaborative editorial meetings where I received constructive feedback to improve my reporting and writing skills.

This Badge is awarded to students who successfully complete CCYJ's local news reporting program. The 6-month program includes training in news reporting and writing, critical thinking, and media literacy. These students work as reporting interns and write stories that are published in San Francisco Bay Area professional news outlets. These are skills students can take to their classes and into their future college and careers pursuits.
