  • My duties as a fire lookout are to detect vegetation, structure and vehicle fires within the Forest Boundary. Use an Osborne fire finder to estimate distance then relay probable size and characteristics of smoke, update on changing conditions to incoming resources, assist with landmarks, and express any known safety problems in the area of the fire. follow-up updates to resources on change in smoke build or change in color, topography and rate of spread.
  • Monitored ground lightning strikes, thunderstorms, and cloud buildup formations, recording data to identify potential vegetation fires and enhance safety.
  • Determined locations using quad, county, and forest maps, then informed Stanislaus Dispatch Center of observations to ensure timely response.
  • Use base and portable radios to relay information to Law Enforcement, Fire Resources, Recreation and Prevention and Patrols.
  • Maintained orderly and legible records such as daily, weather and log book, smoke report forms, lighting strike records, and visitor logs.
  • I retain a positive working relationship with our adjoining land management Partners such as Yosemite NP, Tuolumne/Calaveras Unit, Madera/Mariposa Unit and Sierra NF. Dispatch Centers.
