• Patient care unit (PCU) 200 is a 32-bed cardiac step-down unit . The unit cares for patients with a variety of cardiac conditions and modalities, including pediatric heart-lung transplant; ventricular assist devices such as the Berlin heart, HeartWare, and HeartMate; and pediatric and adult cardiovascular surgery. In addition, the unit is capable of taking on overflow patients from other Pediatric services.
• Administered medications and treatments according to established protocols on Heart Failure medical management , anti-rejection infusions post transplant and anticoagulantion therapy for cardiac surgical palliation and VAD patients.
• Trained nursing staff on new technologies and procedures and taking care of Ventricular Assistive Device.

The Clinical Nurse (CN) is an RN who provides hands-on care to patients, practicing in an evidence- based manner, within the Scope of Practice of the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital policies. Within that role, the CN performs all steps of the nursing process including assessing patients; interpreting data; planning, implementing, and evaluating care; coordinating care with other providers; and teaching the patient and family the knowledge and skills needed to manage their care and prevent complications . The CN partners with the patient’s family wherever possible, considering all aspects of care, to deliver family centered care. As a professional, monitors the quality of nursing care provided.

This is a 20 bed unit specializing in Cardiac critical care, Heart Transplant and Vascular procedures.

• University Medical Center is the leader in comprehensive healthcare delivery in West Texas and this 24-bed, team-oriented unit cares for a variety of cardiac patients, including: post cardiac surgery, post percutaneous coronary intervention, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, and cardiogenic shock. We also care for patients on intra- aortic balloon pump, continuous renal replacement therapy. The CICU/CVCICU is a full service critical care monitored unit, which provides an opportunity to maintain and improve skills in the overall assessment and care of the critically ill patient.
• Develop and update a plan of care based upon the assessment of the patient and in congruence with the medical diagnosis and treatment plan.

• The 4 West nursing unit is a team oriented, Medical-Surgical unit which cares for various medical conditions and specializes in the care of the renal patient. The unit consists of 35 beds including: 31 private rooms and a 4 bed semi-private secured area used to provide care to inmates. The nursing staff on the unit are trained on many therapeutic modalities including: IV therapy; intermittent cardiac monitoring; peritoneal dialysis; parenteral and enteral nutrition; wound and skin care; respiratory care; general post-op surgical care; & moderate sedation for procedures. Special training programs include: peritoneal dialysis, care of renal transplantation patients and chemotherapy administration for registered nurses. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:5.
