  • Juris Doctor Degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada;
  • Champion community advocate and community builder with many years of volunteering experience in community and capacity building resulted in raising my community profile;
  • Upon being rallied to step in the political arena, I took on the mantle of service officially as a candidate in the Provincial Election in 2007, running and winning a seat as a member of provincial parliament in Scarborough-Guildwood, and as the only female candidate running against five men.
  • Re-elected in 2011, in one of the most diverse constituencies in Ontario, with increased support of constituents.
  • Appointed to Cabinet, making history on several firsts, as the first woman Minister of Health Promotion and Sport, first African Canadian woman to be re-elected to the Ontario Legislature, and the first African Canadian Minister of Consumer Services.

Leading the charge for consumer protection in government; at Cabinet, Treasury Board and in the Ontario Legislature.

  • Management, strategic planning, marketing, business development and budget for the Ministry
  • Provincial oversight for approximately 50 consumer protection statutes in the Province of Ontario, and the agencies that reported to the Ministry of Consumer Services
  • Governing body for consumer services including wireless services sector, bereavement services, technical standards and safety
  • Developing a framework for legislative reform of various pieces of legislation, including the Condominium Act, 2012, and the Business Corporations Act
  • Leading the consultation process with respect to legislation pertaining to the Ministry.
  • Introduced legislation relating to consumer protection in the Ontario Legislature
  • Spearheaded several consumer protection initiatives

 A relentless champion for health promotion and sport in Ontario, at Cabinet, Treasury Board and in the Ontario Legislature, motivated and driven leader to achieve significantly impacting the lives of Ontarians during four years as Minister of Health Promotion and Sport and 1 1/4 years as the Minister of Consumer Services for the Province of Ontario. Balancing the competing interests of the Ministry in funding various health promotion initiatives, Public Health Units, sporting organizations and ensuring that core responsibilities of the Ministry were financed and efficiently run and key Provincial health targets were met. Communicating the message of the Ministry in Funding announcements, media and in the Ontario Legislature; Ongoing engagement with stakeholders and community builders to enhance the Ministry's profile to get the message of healthy lifestyles, prevention and management of disease out to the public.   Taking the message to the streets, I raised awareness of heart health, diabetes prevention, injury prevention, reduced the consumption of cigarette products and engaged a Province to eating healthier, more active living and a better and higher quality of life.   Management, strategic planning, marketing, business development and budget for the Ministry, achieving budgetary targets in all four years.   As the champion for  health promotion, prevention and wellness in the Province of Ontario.I led a wide range of programs and services that included chronic disease prevention, injury prevention, physical activity, sport participation and mental wellness.Governing body for all the Public Health Units in the Province of OntarioGoverning body for all of Ontario's Sporting Organizations.  ​Responsible for the Smoke Free Ontario Act, and introduced legislation banning smoking in cars with children and removing tobacco products from visibility. Lead Minister for Ontario's successful bid for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American GamesSpeaker and lecturer at health promotion, sports and related events locally and internationally 
  • Established budgetary directives, managed costs, prioritized needs; 
  • Provided strategic direction, fostered mutually beneficial partnerships and relationships with stakeholders; 
  • Created strong strategic alliances with organization leaders to effectively align with community needs;
  • Brought key program and services to constituents, and supported key health promotion initiatives;
  • Exercised leadership and demonstrated competency in achieving key accomplishments which have left a large legacy for Ontarians, which will be a positive impact on Ontarians well into the future including the sports and recreational legacy of the Pan/Parapan American Games;
  • Driving Ontario's health promotion campaign, and marketing Ontario's health promotion, disease prevention and mental wellness strategies to Ontario's 13 million people;
  • Promoting healthy living, regular exercise, sports and recreation for heart health, mental health, chronic disease prevention, injury prevention through the Ministry of Health Promotion's work with key community partners including the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Ottawa Heart Institute, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and as the governing body for Ontario's Public Health Units;
  • Introducing key initiatives under Ontario's Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy, including an amendment to the Smoke Free Ontario Act, banning smoking in cars with children and prohibiting the display of tobacco products on store shelves;
  • Strategic and insightful design thinking were also key to the development and marketing strategy for Ontario's successful bid for the Pan/Parapan American Games of 2015.  By targeted strategic communication, planning, people skills and personality, we gained the confidence of Sports Ministers from the Pan American Diaspora and the Pan American Sporting Organization leaders, to rally the votes to win our bid.

Accomplishments
