Our gynecology unit on 6B was moved up to the 5th floor to Family Newborn Services. I was cross -trained to that service also. Many of my duties and responsibilities were much the same as on the GYNE Unit, and included nursing care of a postpartum mother and her newborn child. Much support was provided to the mother and her partner to help with breast-feeding and care of the infant.
In January, 2016, our Gynecology Unit moved up to 7A, and combined with Prenatal Special Care.
I worked on a busy, 25 bed, locked unit of Alzheimer’s/dementia veterans.
Much of my nursing duties are as above in my previous experiences.
RNs would oversee the work of the LPNs.
RNs and LPNs in this facility were very much hands-on and provided direct patient care, including personal care to the veterans. These patients were in various stages of decline, and treatment plans changed often in collaboration with the gerontologist, social work, other departments and patients’ families.
RNs worked very closely with the veterans families and provided education and emotional support when needed, especially toward the end of life and provided palliative care.
