The shelter monitor role requires an attentive and problem solving attitude.

  • Kept watch of the floors in the shelter, communicating with lobby whether clients were headed down or any other important detail.
  • Let clients into their rooms swiftly and with positive heartwarming tone.
  • Worked with many different houseless folks, many being black and POC suffering with mental and physical health issues, substance use, etc.
  • Passed out breakfast, lunch, and dinner respectively at the correct time, fulfilling clients special dietary needs and checked up on them while delivering.
  • Conducted daily wellness checks with clients making sure room was clean and checked for maintenance or repairs needed.
  • Helped answering any questions regarding resources and people they could connect with to help with social work needs, nursing, food, etc.
  • Helped provide clients with basic living materials such as toothpaste, shampoo, soap, toilet paper as well as harm reduction resources such as clean new pipes, bubbles, foil and brillo kits, clean and sterile needles and IDU supplies.
  • Assisted nurses with clients when needed, helping pass supplies and support to clients during visits. Maintained floors and lobby clean, taking out trash and sanitizing frequently.
  • Stayed in charge of lobby at times helping with new intakes, the exiting of folks who did not follow rules and protocols, monitoring who came in and out, asking COVID questions and checking temperatures and badges of any officials visiting.
  • Very often had to deescalate altercations with clients and helped assessed their needs and make them feel heard and acknowledged.
  • Answered phone calls, directing them to correct individual and passed out mail and packages for clients.
  • Familiar with using Narcan to help with opioid overdose and called ambulance if needed, writing down detailed reports to document incident.
  • Often times served as translator for folks who only spoke Spanish.

  • As a co-manager I continuously monitored the restaurant and took appropriate action to ensure food quality and customer service.
  • With the store making over $250,000 in profit a year alone I minimized loss and misuse of equipment through proper restaurant supervision and training. This resulted in a increased weekly revenue by 6% within two months in this position.
  • Optimized profits by controlling food, beverage and labor costs on a daily basis.
  • Counseled and disciplined staff when necessary; however I learned to communicate well and use strong interpersonal skills to establish very positive relationships with both guests and employees.
  • Assisted customers with store and product complaints, became very well at this and am able to resolve customer complaints fairly quickly and smoothly.
  • Constantly expressed appreciation and invited customers to return to the store. I also managed cash stock and inventory balances accurately, I was often left in charge of monthly inventory because of my accuracy.
  • Maintained adequate cash supply in cash drawers in multiple checkout stations and compiled weekly monetary reports and records for store managers.

Crisis Text Line - Crisis Counselor

  • In process of becoming Crisis Counselor, helping folks dealing with things such as sexual assault, bullying, suicide, etc. Volunteer 4 hours a week after training is over with support happening through texting participants.

  • Help with making of harm reduction supplies and distribution.
  • Supplies include syringes, foil packs, brillo kits, assortment of pipes, etc.
  • Helped with deescalation of incoming participants.

Shanti-CERV

  • The COVID Emergency Response Volunteer communicates with clients and case managers to provide emergency support to clients many being disabled or elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Assist clients with groceries or errands that need to be run. Weekly communicate with clients to ask what their needs are reporting to case managers afterwards.
  • Aside from physical errands we also provide a safe, comfortable space to talk with folxs about whatever they’d like offering companionship while following COVID precautions and guidelines.
