My job consisted of testing our local farms crops, water sources, and swabs of equiptment for diseases, such as
E.Coli, STEC, Salmonella, and Listeria. We run the samples through a test called PCR or we put some samples
on a petrifilm and let that incubate for a cetain amount of time. What I would do was greet the customers, receive
the samples, fill out the paperwork, then continue to prep the sample. For crop samples we had to enrich them
with this substance called MP Media. The media helps pull all the substances from the crops and would pull any
diseases that would be in them as well. Then you would incubate them for 24 hours. For water samples, we would
mainly only test for E. coli. Meaning we would take the sample of water, then fill it up with a powder called
Coilert-18 that helps detect whether its positive or negative for E.Coli. then you would pour the mixture in a
quantity tray, seal it up in incubate it for 24 hours then you would read the results by putting the tray underneath
an LED light and if it glows and it is yellow that means it is positive for E. coli. For swab samples, we would enrich
the sample with 9 mL of buffer water. Drop a specific amount of the mixture into the petrifilm then incubate
that for 24hrs, you would read the results by counting how many dots were on the petrifilm. I also did a lot of
cleaning, disinfecting, paperwork, computer work. Some weeks I would even work more than 40 hours some I
would only work 28. My schedule would depend on the amount of work i had to do so I can be flexible when it
comes to working. I went back to work for the company from June-August 2024.
