  • Company Overview: One of the leading forestry industry lumber mills
  • In August 2021, I made the decision to move to British Columbia
  • I had landed a job with one of the leading forestry industry lumber mills
  • It was a great experience working with a great team
  • The fast pace production lines kept me on my toes while learning the steps that are needed to produce industrial and commercial grade lumber
  • The first position on the totem pole was working with the stacker operator
  • Strip placing was low stress level, but was a physically demanding position
  • Hard work and determination paid off when soon after being hired
  • I started training as a trim saw operator which was a very busy position
  • From the start of the shift, until the last minute of the day, I worked extremely hard grading, and both sorting and flipping boards ranging from 8' 2x4's to 20' 2x12's
  • Everyone at the mill was very helpful and taught me a lot about the industry
  • Fortunately, a new opportunity came up and my time at the mill came to an end
  • One of the leading forestry industry lumber mills

  • Over the winter and into spring, I gained employment with another great company, Precision Drilling
  • The project was drilling for natural gas in Grand Prairie Alberta
  • Like previous positions in the industry, I still found the project interesting as with new projects come new experiences such as working with different mud systems and formations
  • New crew members and new friendships are something I always look forward to when entering an unfamiliar location
  • The duties are much the same, such as monitoring mud properties, and maintaining mud properties according to the daily mud reports
  • I also helped train and mentor new work hands
  • I was also responsible for reporting and relaying to the company representative(s)
  • Unfortunately, the project came to an end and it was time to move on

  • Fortunately, I had the opportunity to be part of a new project starting up in Texas
  • This time, it was at the ground level of building the company's first rig in the United States
  • Working in the yard as a great experience as it gave me in-depth knowledge on fabrication and the manufacturing process
  • Once in the field, I was responsible for maintaining drilling fluid according to the mud program, monitoring mud properties, recording and reporting drilling fluid to the company man and mud engineer
  • I also managed tubulars in mast during tripping operations, monitored, maintained, and repaired mud pumps
  • Additionally, I assisted with daily rig maintenance, and worked with all crew members on housekeeping to ensure a safe working environment
  • Identifying workplace hazards and implementing proper procedures to rectify in a safe manner was part of my responsibility
  • I participated in pre-job safety meetings with workhands before, during, and after jobs, as well as trained and mentored other crew members

  • In this position, I was responsible for operating ultrasonic stimulation technology for both on and offshore applications

  • Much like Canada, the drilling sides were very similar
  • I was responsible for educating and training staff with little rig experience to ensure safe work practice
  • I learned to operate controls of specialized drilling equipment for operations including oil and gas exploration, production wells, horizontal drilling, and under balanced drilling
  • Taking advantage of my years in the Canadian oil and gas industry, I adapted well

  • Working with Savanna was a rewarding experience
  • I was able to experience different operations in various parts of Alberta
  • My coworkers were excellent to work with, and all the company personnel were always willing to help
  • Daily operations included, but not limited to, performing daily safety meetings with crew members, reporting operations to company representatives, ensuring the work site was safe and efficient, keeping daily logs in the tour sheet and reporting back to the rig manager, maintaining and repairing drilling equipment, and learning and understanding various sites and different formations
  • Taking advantage of my years in the Canadian oil and gas industry, I adapted well
