Cover Letter

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am applying to the position of Registered Nurse to join the health care team at the Portage Medical Family Health team . I believe I will be an exceptional asset to your team as I am focused on providing high quality, client-centered care with a compassionate attitude and have experience in both women's health and senior/geriatric care. I have attached a copy of my resume to further showcase my experience and qualifications that I believe would make me an excellent addition to the Portage Medical Family Health team.

I am a graduate nurse from York University in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. In addition, I have extensive experience within the Niagara Health Resource team (primarily based in the Pediatric/NICU departments), in dealing with a wide variety of different issues related to women's health along with my experiences in labor and delivery during my nursing consolidation. This experience has provided me with a strong foundation of practical knowledge along with my nursing education. I am also personally passionate about women's health, and am an advocate for marginalized women along with their families.

In my six years of clinical experience, I have utilized my nursing skills, developed therapeutic nurse-client relationships, and enhanced my critical thinking and reasoning to provide through high quality client-centered care. In my most recent position as a pediatric community home care nurse, I have had the opportunity to care for clients from various cultural and social backgrounds in both home and school settings. I have been able to ensure safe, competent, and quality care, utilizing my knowledge, skills and nursing judgment. I work closely with multiple members of each childs family, educational and health care teams to ensure the best possible quality of life overall to my patients. I would also like to note, I am currently learning american sign language to be able to communicate both personally and professionally with a wider range of individuals.

In addition, my position as shift charge nurse at Edgewater Gardens LTCH, gave me a wealth of experience in working with the geriatric community, thus giving me the opportunity to work with new diagnoses and treatments I had not previously had much experience with. I was exposed to the complexities of the senior experience and learned how to best support those living with multiple chronic conditions. My passion for pharmacology was well utilized as I worked closely with the nurse practitioner and physicians, when searching for different treatment and/or lifestyle options for our residents. In my role as charge nurse, I supervised and managed my colleagues, expanded my leadership skills and my knowledge base while continuing to provide quality patient care.

I look forward to meeting with you to discuss how my skills and abilities would be of the greatest value to the Portage Medical Family Health team. I can be reached with the contact information provided above, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely yours,

Leah Smith, RN, BScN
