LAURA TRAININI

Vancouver,BC

Summary

My career has developed in the fields of performance, teaching and music promotion. My performance activity unfolded mainly in Mexico and China, where I played as a principal flute in the Chihuahua Estate Orchestra, Toluca Philharmonic Orchestra and Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra for a total of ten years, acquiring a wide experience in team leading and chamber music. On the pedagogical side, I have 14 years of music instruction experience - teaching over 200 students across 5 languages including English, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and French. My teaching pedagogy is based on bridging the newest teaching strategies with the solid background that I'd acquired in my long classical training, tailoring my lessons to every student's need and considering their cultural background. Wherever I moved, I tried to create connections between people and different cultural environments, bridging musical cultures and artists from different backgrounds. With this goal, I founded MusicaProjectItaly, an artist agency that promoted in China European artists and facilitated Chinese students' access to European music schools and education projects. I'm currently a DMA candidate at UBC Vancouver, where I'm researching embodied techniques in flute practice and performance. I founded in Italy a cultural company as a tool to promote music events, especially in marginalized areas and disadvantaged communities.

To tear down the walls between academic music research and audience, I designed "The Music Bubble", a podcast aiming to share awareness about all the different facets of music phenomena and to grow the music audience.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH

My research focuses on investigating music performance practices within the music embodiment theoretical frame.

My goal is to contribute to outlining a more holistic approach to flute practicing and performing, that helps flutists to gain awareness of their gestures and movements, thus providing them with tools to enrich their expressiveness.

Upcoming presentations of my research will be included in:

  • "Doctors in Performance" Festival conference in London, at the Royal Academy of Music, (30 August- 1 September 2023), https://www.ram.ac.uk/doctors-in-performance-festival-conference
  • "Creativity in music and the arts" organized by GAPS2 - Global Arts and Psychology Seminar (14-16 September 2023) https://sites.google.com/view/gaps2
  • Convegno annuale ANDA, in Modena, at Conservatorio di Musica “Orazio Vecchi – Antonio Tonelli” (29 settembre – 1° ottobre 2023) https://www.anda-afam.it/modena/
