Summary

As a renal home therapies nurse, I rely on establishing strong rapport with my patients and their families. Excellent communication skills are required, as I am frequently communicating with the interdisciplinary team regarding patient care.

Time management is important in my position. I am often the only person working in home therapies, so if there are multiple issues, the ability to prioritize is important.

Our program covers a very large geographical area with many rural patients, so thinking outside of the box and being creative is definitely a valuable skill

I have worked in a variety of different health care settings in different hospitals, and can adapt to changes staying focused and calm.

I like to stay up to date on my nursing skills and try to regularly enroll in relevant courses to do so.

Skills

  • As a renal home therapies nurse, I am routinely involved in conducting patient assessments, patient teaching, regular clinics, home visits, and staff education My position involves extensive teamwork and ongoing clear communication, including frequent collaboration with other home therapy educators provincially, working with our interdisciplinary team, and working with patients and their families on a regular basis In regards to patient teaching, I have found that it is crucial to be skilled with being able to vary the teaching style Every individual learns at a different pace with different strengths, vulnerabilities, and coping abilities In my position as a patient educator, it is imperative to develop strong rapport and strong professional relationships with patients There is a huge amount of trust involved between patients and their healthcare providers I find critical thinking is an essential skill in my job As our program covers such a vast geographical area and encompasses two different dialysis modalities, it is essential to be a flexible thinker, or to be able to think outside of the box, so to speak I also feel that it is imperative to see my job as an ongoing learning opportunity I am always learning something new, whether it be in my professional practice, or from my patients

Upcoming Plans

  • As an offshoot of the current Selkirk College practicum that I am currently acting as preceptor for, there are plans for another preceptor involvement with a 3rd year course which would involve a larger patient population. The hope is that the CKD population can be included with our home therapies population.
  • My husband is a teacher, and completed his Master's degree in Education with an emphasis on technology. He would like to collaborate with me and work on different opportunities for technology use in renal home therapies. We are currently looking at how Virtual Reality could have a significant positive impact on the renal home therapies population.
