Kevin Yu

Summary

I'm currently studying game design to be able to work in the game industry in the future. I was passionate about games and started playing games since I was little. Then, the older I grew, the more attention I would pay on how a game is made, the intentions the developers had in different parts of a game, the review of a game and the trends of the market. The kinds of games I'm interested tend to be story-driven, has aesthetic atomsphere, has creative mechanics, or a combination of them. My understanding of game design is to create an experience through various means (visual, sound, in-game interactions, story-telling and so on). I'm looking forward to work in the game industry.

Game Designer & Personal Project Manager

  • Level design - created the game world in UE4 and play-tested different routes to reach an objective
  • Thought about what the player would do and where s/he would go while building the level
  • UX/UI - placing instructional texts at the right places
  • Currently working on the building of the puzzles
  • Will work on sound effects, the visual and the narrative design of the game

Level & UX/UI Designer

  • Designed the playable levels and made sure the location of the platforms made sense
  • Play-tested all the levels to make sure the player can access all the platforms and isn't stuck
  • Designed few tiles using Photoshop and put them to work in Unity
  • Designed a special level - a diagonal map with falling rocks
  • Making the menu screen and the victory screen using Photoshop
  • Making the particle effects of running, landing and projectiles colliding in Unity
  • Generating ideas for weapon projectiles and special levels that interact with players (ex. the falling rock one)

Narrative Designer

  • Made some of the weekly events which will be generated randomly throughout the gameplay. I had to think about what is happening, the NPCs involved, what choices the player will face, and the corresponding consequences
  • Coordinated with other narrative designers by organizing their events, fixing mistakes in them, and asking them if something doesn't make sense
  • Coordinated with resource designers who created the resource system in the game to make sure the consequences from the events make sense
  • Coordinated with the programmers to sort out the amount of resources a player gains/loses from an event
  • Used Inkle to write, to code and to organize events and upload them into Unity
